How This Data Was Sourced

The pistol grip data in this guide comes from real GunPartPicker builds — not surveys, not affiliate click data, not manufacturer claims.

We analyzed over 15,000+ new anonymous AR-15 builds created in February . Of those, 2,400+ builds included a pistol grip selection across 200+ unique models and 20+ brands.

To ensure data quality, we weighted builds containing 6 or more components — indicating genuine purchase intent rather than casual browsing.

GunPartPicker does not track, identify, or store any personal information about builders. All build data is aggregated and anonymized. Your build is your business.

The Pistol Grip Landscape

Magpul — Multiple Angles, One Standard (22.6%)

Magpul offers grips at several different angles, and builders spread across them:

  • MOE K2 (Gray): 5.9% — steeper angle for a more natural wrist position
  • MOE-SL (Dark Earth): 4.7% — slim profile with moderate angle
  • Plus various MOE, MIAD, and K2+ variants

Magpul's strength is options. Whether you want a steep K2 angle or a traditional MOE angle, they have a grip that fits your hand.

Hexmag (8.9%) and Wilson Combat (7.3%)

Hexmag's Rubber Tactical Grip is the top individual product at 8.9%. Its rubberized texture provides excellent traction in all conditions. Wilson Combat's Starburst Gunfighter at 7.3% is the premium pick — its aggressive starburst texture and ergonomic shape make it a favorite for duty builds.

Timber Creek Outdoors (13.4%)

Timber Creek takes second place as a brand at 13.4%. Their Enforcer grip at 7.0% appeals to builders who want to match their grip to other Timber Creek parts (charging handle, handguard accessories).

The A2 Lives On (5.7%)

CMMG's A2 Pistol Grip at 5.7% proves the original mil-spec design still has its fans. It's the cheapest option and some builders genuinely prefer the vertical angle for certain shooting positions.

Budget Tier: Under $20

You don't need to spend much to get a solid grip. The most popular grips in our build data — the Magpul K2 and MOE-SL — both fall under $20. The CMMG A2 at under $5 is the cheapest functional grip you can buy, and B5 Systems offers excellent ergonomics right at the $19 mark.

The Magpul K2 and MOE-SL are the two most popular grips in our data — and both are under $20. Most builders don't need to spend more than this.

Mid Tier: $20–$50

The mid tier is where you get rubberized overmolding, premium textures, and name-brand ergonomics. The Luth-AR Chubby is a favorite for larger hands, the K2+ adds rubber overmolding to the K2 design, and Wilson Combat's Starburst is one of the most recognized grips in the industry. Daniel Defense rounds out the tier with their signature overmolded grip.

The Wilson Combat Starburst and Daniel Defense grip are duty-grade picks. If you're building a rifle you'll train with regularly, this is the sweet spot for price-to-quality.

Premium Tier: $50+

Premium grips are about billet aluminum construction, color-matched aesthetics, and oversized ergonomics. Magpul's K2-XL is the only oversized grip from a major manufacturer — built for shooters with large hands. Timber Creek's Enforcer line offers CNC-machined billet aluminum in multiple color options for builders who want a matching accessory set.

Premium billet grips look great but add weight compared to polymer options. Make sure the aesthetic upgrade is worth the tradeoff for your build's purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hexmag Rubber Tactical Grip leads individual products at 8.9%. Magpul dominates as a brand at 22.6% when combining their MOE K2, MOE-SL, and other variants.
Yes. The standard A2 grip is nearly vertical. The Magpul K2 has a steeper angle that many shooters find more natural. The MOE and MOE-SL have a moderate angle. Try before you buy if possible.
It's personal preference. Rubber grips (Hexmag, Hogue) provide more traction and cushioning. Polymer grips (Magpul, B5) are lighter and don't absorb moisture. Both work well.
5.7% of builders in our data still choose the A2 style grip (CMMG). It's not bad — it's mil-spec proven. But most builders find aftermarket grips more comfortable for extended shooting sessions.
