Why Wilson Combat

Wilson Combat is Bill Wilson's custom shop in Berryville, Arkansas, founded in 1977 and building ARs since 1999. Machining, gunsmithing, test fire and finishing all happen in one place, and that's the pitch for its rifle parts.

The bolt carrier groups are the parts most people buy. They're full auto profile carriers in black nitride or black phosphate at about $186 retail, with polished nickel boron versions around $217. The Tactical Trigger Unit is a drop-in two stage with a 4 to 4.5 pound pull and H13 steel parts.

The gas blocks are stainless low profile blocks in .750, .875 and .938 for about $36, with adjustable versions and the Sentry blocks made with SLR. Barrels are 416R stainless and button rifled. Complete rifles like the Recon Tactical come in over a dozen calibers, certified under 1.5 inches at 100 yards.

Wilson parts often sell for less than you'd think. Its bolt carriers go for about $153 against roughly $199 for the typical carrier, and it's the second most added BCG at about 17%. Its gas blocks run about $30 against roughly $51 and land in about 20% of builds with one.

There's no written warranty, a choice Wilson puts down to federal warranty law, though it promises to stand behind its parts. The complete rifles are where cost bites: a Recon Tactical lists around $2,575.
