What thread pitch is my barrel?
Pick the barrel. The standard thread and every device in the catalog that threads onto it come back, in stock first.
The most common muzzle thread in the world. Almost every 5.56 barrel is 1/2x28.
Only one thread is common on this platform.
Flash hiders tame the flash, brakes and compensators tame recoil and rise, suppressor mounts carry a can.

1/2x28 muzzle devices for AR-15
Devices rated for 5.56 NATO, .223 Remington, .223 Wylde come first, then other calibers that share the thread. A device on the right thread but the wrong bore is the one mistake this list cannot catch for you, so read the caliber on the listing.

Suppressors for 5.56 NATO
Cans rated for this caliber. Direct thread models on this pitch come first; most cans list a mount system rather than a thread, so check the mount before ordering. A suppressor's bore rating matters more than its thread: a .30 caliber can fits a 5.56 barrel's device thread on an adapter, a .22 can never goes on a 5.56 barrel.

Barrels for this platform that list the same thread. Useful when you already own the device and are picking the barrel around it.

How muzzle thread pitch works: diameter, pitch and hand
A thread spec has two numbers. The first is the major diameter of the thread: 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 13.5 millimeters. The second is the pitch: threads per inch on an imperial thread (28, 24, 36) or millimeters between threads on a metric one (1.0, 1.5). A device fits when both match and the hand (right or left) matches.
Bore diameter drives the thread. A .224 bore leaves enough wall on a 1/2 inch thread; a .30 bore does not, so .30 caliber barrels step up to 5/8 inch. That is why the same 5/8x24 thread turns up on .308, .300 Blackout, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm ARC and .350 Legend: the thread fits, the bore does not always. A .30 caliber brake on a .350 Legend barrel is a baffle strike waiting to happen.
The two look alike traps are 1/2x28 against 1/2x36 on 9mm barrels, and 5/8x24 against 5/8x32 on .458 SOCOM. Both pairs will start by hand and bind after a turn or two. If a device stops early, stop turning.

Common muzzle thread mistakes
- Right thread, wrong bore. A 5/8x24 .30 caliber device on a .350 Legend or 8.6 Blackout barrel. The thread checks out and the first bullet hits the baffle.
- 1/2x28 on a 1/2x36 barrel. Colt pattern 9mm barrels. It starts, binds, and strips the barrel threads if forced.
- Rimfire can on a centerfire barrel. Same 1/2x28 thread. A .22 LR suppressor is not rated for 5.56 pressure.
- Assuming the AK thread. Imported AKs are M14x1 LH; many US made ones are 5/8x24. Read the barrel, not the rifle.
- Left hand device on a right hand thread. European 9mm pistols (M13.5x1 LH) and US aftermarket barrels (1/2x28) are not interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What thread pitch is an AR-15 barrel?
Almost every 5.56 NATO, .223 Rem and .223 Wylde AR-15 barrel is threaded 1/2x28. .300 Blackout barrels are 5/8x24 because the bore is .30 caliber.
What thread pitch do .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrels use?
5/8x24 on every mainstream AR-10 and LR-308 pattern barrel, and on 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC. A .30 caliber device fits all of them; a bore matched device is quieter on a suppressor.
Are 9mm pistol and 9mm PCC muzzle threads the same?
Usually. US made 9mm barrels for pistols and AR-9s are 1/2x28. The exceptions are Colt pattern and some older 9mm AR barrels at 1/2x36, and European factory pistol barrels at M13.5x1 LH. 1/2x28 and 1/2x36 look identical and will cross thread.
Can I put a 5.56 muzzle device on a .22 LR barrel?
Yes, the thread is the same 1/2x28 and the bore is the same .224. The reverse is the problem: never fire 5.56 or .223 through a suppressor rated for rimfire only.
Can I use a .308 device on a .300 Blackout barrel?
Yes. Same 5/8x24 thread, same .30 caliber bore. A suppressor rated for .308 is rated for .300 Blackout, supersonic or subsonic.
What does LH mean on a thread spec?
Left hand. The device tightens counterclockwise. AK-47 pattern barrels (M14x1 LH) and European 9mm pistols (M13.5x1 LH) use it. A right hand device will not start on a left hand thread.
Why does my 1/2x28 device wobble on a 1/2x28 barrel?
The thread is right; the shoulder is not seated. Use a crush washer, a shim set or a jam nut so the device torques against the barrel shoulder rather than bottoming out on the threads.
