How an AR-15 Charging Handle Works, in 3D: Standard vs Ambi

Watch an AR-15 charging handle unlatch and pull the bolt carrier back by its gas key in 3D, then watch the rifle fire while the handle stays put. Compare a standard latch with an ambidextrous one.

Quick answer

  • The charging handle slides in a channel along the top of the upper. Pulling it drags the bolt carrier back by its gas key, to load the first round or clear the rifle.
  • It does not move when the rifle fires: the gas key slides back under it, so the carrier runs on its own.
  • A latch on the T holds it forward. Ambidextrous handles have a latch on each side, and gas busting handles keep suppressor gas away from your face.

Watch the latch open and the handle pull the carrier back, or watch the rifle fire while the handle stays put. Try the ambi latch, step through it, or drag to turn it.

Latched home

The charging handle rides in a channel along the top of the upper, over the bolt carrier. A spring loaded latch on its T hooks into a notch in the upper and holds it forward.

Illustrative, not to scale or real time: the parts are drawn shapes, and real handles differ in the shape of the latch and the T.

How does an AR-15 charging handle work?

By pulling on the gas key. The handle rides in its own channel over the bolt carrier, and a lug at its front sits just ahead of the gas key on top of the carrier. Pull the handle back and the lug drags the carrier with it: the bolt unlocks, the hammer is cocked and the chamber opens. Let go and the buffer spring drives the carrier home, and the gas key pushes the handle home with it.

Because the slot the gas key rides in is open at the back, the carrier can run back on its own, which is why the handle stays still when you shoot. See the carrier itself in how a BCG works, and how the upper comes apart in upper vs lower receiver.

Do I need an ambidextrous charging handle?

Not if you shoot right handed and run the handle with your left hand; the standard latch is on that side. An ambi handle helps left handed shooters, anyone who runs it with the firing hand, and one handed pulls from either side, which can twist a standard handle in its channel.

Shooting suppressed, look for a gas busting handle: it seals or vents the channel so less gas comes back at your face. See which mounts and cans fit in suppressor mount types, and tune the extra gas with the buffer weight calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an AR-15 charging handle work?

It pulls the bolt carrier back by its gas key. A lug at the handle's front sits ahead of the gas key, so pulling the handle drags the carrier back to cock the hammer and open the bolt; the buffer spring then drives both home.

Does the charging handle move when you shoot?

No. The gas key rides in a slot in the handle that is open at the back, so the carrier runs back under the handle without moving it. It stays latched forward.

What is an ambidextrous charging handle?

One with a latch on each side of the T, so either hand can unlatch it. It also pulls straight when you pull one handed from either side, where a standard handle can twist.

What is a gas busting charging handle?

One built to keep gas out of your face. Shooting suppressed pushes more gas back through the charging handle channel; a gas busting handle seals the channel or vents it to the side.

Should I ride the charging handle forward?

No. Pull it all the way back and let go. Easing it forward by hand can leave the bolt short of locked; the spring is what seats it.

Do all charging handles fit all AR-15 uppers?

Any mil spec AR-15 charging handle fits any mil spec AR-15 upper. AR-10 and some pistol caliber uppers take their own handles.
