Free Float vs Drop In Handguard, in 3D: How AR-15 Handguards Mount

Watch an AR-15 free float handguard go on its barrel nut in 3D, lean on a free float and a drop in handguard to see which one moves the barrel, and lock an M-LOK rail section in. Plus M-LOK vs KeyMod and what length fits your barrel.

Quick answer

  • A free float handguard mounts only to the barrel nut and never touches the barrel, so a sling, bipod or rest can't push the barrel off where it points.
  • A drop in handguard is held between the delta ring and a handguard cap on the barrel, so pressure on it reaches the barrel.
  • Most handguards today are M-LOK: accessories bolt straight into the slots with T-nuts that turn a quarter turn to lock.

Thread on the barrel nut

The barrel nut holds the barrel in the upper. It threads onto the front of the receiver over the barrel extension; a free float handguard brings its own nut, shaped to fit it.

Illustrative, not to scale or real time: the parts are drawn shapes, the barrel's bend is drawn far larger than real, and real handguards differ in their nuts and clamps.

Is a free float handguard worth it?

For most builds, yes. Because a free float handguard holds on only at the barrel nut, nothing you hang on it or rest it on touches the barrel, so your zero stays put with a sling, a bipod or a barricade. Free float handguards also give you M-LOK slots and a full length top rail. A drop in handguard is cheaper and swaps without tools, and it is fine for a close range carbine.

Going free float on a front sight base barrel means swapping to a low profile gas block. See how the block and tube work in how an AR-15 gas system works, and check a short barrel build in the SBR planner.

What length handguard should I get?

Long enough to cover the gas block, and short enough to stop before the muzzle device. With a low profile block, that means at least about three quarters of an inch past the gas port, and about half an inch short of the barrel's end. On a 16 inch mid length barrel that is anything from about 10 to 15.5 inches, and most people pick 13 to 15.

Running a suppressor or a big brake? Check that the device fits inside or clears the handguard's front. See how they work in how muzzle devices work, and price the whole build in the AR build cost calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a free float and a drop in handguard?

Where it holds on. A free float handguard bolts only to the barrel nut and never touches the barrel. A drop in handguard is held between the delta ring and a cap on the barrel, so pressure on it reaches the barrel.

Does a free float handguard improve accuracy?

It keeps your zero from moving. A sling, bipod or rest pressing on a drop in handguard bends the barrel slightly and shifts where shots land; a free float handguard takes that load itself.

Can I put a free float handguard on any AR-15?

Yes, on any mil spec upper, with the barrel nut it comes with. With a front sight base gas block you also need a low profile gas block that fits inside the handguard.

Is M-LOK better than KeyMod?

For most people, yes. M-LOK is lighter, has far more accessories and did better in SOCOM's 2017 testing, so nearly every new handguard uses it. KeyMod still works but is being phased out.

How does M-LOK work?

An M-LOK accessory has T-nuts under it. You push them through the handguard's slots and tighten the screws, which turns each nut a quarter turn across the slot so it clamps the inside of the handguard.

What length handguard do I need?

One that covers the gas block and stops short of the muzzle device. On a 16 inch mid length barrel, about 10 to 15.5 inches fits, and 13 to 15 is the usual pick; on a 16 inch carbine gas barrel, 12 to 15.
