How much does it cost to build a 16" 5.56 NATO AR-15?

Change any selection and every slot refills with the part builders add most that is in stock and fits, at the tier you chose. Three totals: your picks, the cheapest in stock build that fits, and a median build. Popularity is computed from over 1 million AR parts selected on GunPartPicker since 2020.

Rifle

AR-15 receivers, 1/2x28 muzzle thread.

Calls for a mid-length gas tube.

Sets the gas block journal: .750 with this profile.

Override only if the barrel you want is drilled for a different length.

Bands are computed per slot over the parts that fit these selections, not over the whole catalog.

Upper receiver options

Must clear the muzzle device and cover the gas block.

Threaded 1/2x28 either way.

Lower receiver options

Applies to the lower and the upper.

Optics, extras and finish

Only used when the optic is an LPVO or a scope.

A preference, not a filter: parts in this color win ties, black fills in where nothing else is in stock.

How the parts are chosen from real build data

Every slot starts from the in stock parts in its category. The selections filter that set to what physically fits: barrels by caliber and length (read from the product name, which is what the merchant actually sells), the gas tube by the gas length that barrel length calls for, the handguard by a length that clears the muzzle device and covers the gas block, the muzzle device by thread and caliber, the bolt carrier by cartridge, the mount by the scope's tube diameter.

Popularity is not a guess. It comes from over 1 million AR parts selected on GunPartPicker since 2020: every time a builder adds a part to a build it counts, and that is the number each slot is ranked by. The price tier then keeps one third of what fits: the cheapest third, the middle third or the top third, computed for that slot and these selections. Inside the band the pick is the part builders add to real GunPartPicker builds most often, then the most reviewed, then the cheapest. If the band is empty the slot falls back to everything that fits and says so.

The real builds section is the check on the whole thing: public builds with the same platform, caliber and barrel length, each priced at today's best merchant price for every part in it. That is the difference from a price range table. The totals are real carts of real parts at today's prices, and they change when a part sells out.

What an AR build cost does not include

  • Magazines and iron sights
  • The FFL transfer fee on the lower
  • Sales tax and shipping
  • Armorer's wrench, vise block, punches, torque wrench
  • Lubricant and the ammo to zero it
  • A sling, a light, and everything else on the rail

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to build an AR-15 in 2026?

It depends on the tier and the barrel. Set the caliber and length above and read the three totals: the most popular parts at your tier, the cheapest in stock parts that fit, and a median build. All three move daily with merchant prices, which is why this page does not print a number in its text.

Is it cheaper to build an AR-15 or buy one?

Buying wins at the bottom of the market. A complete budget rifle usually undercuts the cheapest parts build because the maker buys barrels and receivers by the thousand. Building wins once you want a specific barrel, trigger or handguard, because you pay for the parts you care about and mil-spec for the rest.

What parts does a complete AR-15 build need?

Stripped lower, lower parts kit, trigger, pistol grip, buffer tube assembly, stock or brace, stripped upper, barrel, gas block, gas tube, handguard, muzzle device, bolt carrier group and charging handle. That is the list this calculator fills. An optic and mount are optional slots.

What is not in the total?

Magazines, iron sights, the FFL transfer fee on the lower, sales tax and shipping, the armorer's wrench, vise block and punches, lubricant, and ammo to zero it.

How are the parts chosen?

Each slot is filtered to what fits your selections: barrel by caliber and length, gas tube by the gas length that barrel calls for, handguard by length, muzzle device by thread, BCG by cartridge, mount by scope tube. Inside that set the price tier keeps the cheapest, middle or top third, and the pick is the part builders add most, then the most reviewed, then the cheapest. Only in stock parts are considered.

Why is a slot empty?

Nothing in stock matches the selections. Lower parts kits and short barrels go in and out of stock week to week. Try the next barrel length or a different tier, and check the products page for that category.

Can I buy a complete lower and just build the upper?

Yes, and it is often the cheaper path. A complete lower replaces the lower, parts kit, grip, buffer tube and stock slots. Add those five prices up and compare them to a complete lower on the products page.

Do I need a gunsmith to assemble it?

No. An armorer's wrench, a vise with an upper receiver block and a torque wrench cover the upper. The only precision step is torquing the barrel nut and timing the gas tube hole. The lower is pins, springs and a castle nut.
