About Colt
Colt is the Connecticut gunmaker behind the M4 carbine, the original military AR maker. It's now part of Colt CZ Group.
Founded 1855, West Hartford, CT, Made in USA · Military contractor · M4 carbine
Why Colt
Colt is the Connecticut company that built the M16 for the military and developed the M4 in the 1980s. It's been part of Czech owned Colt CZ Group since 2021 and still builds in West Hartford.
Government contracts keep coming. In May 2024 the Army gave Colt a $57.2 million award for M4 and M4A1 carbines. That pedigree is what you're buying with a Colt AR: a rifle built to the spec everyone else copies.
Beyond ARs, Colt brought back the Python, Cobra, King Cobra and Anaconda revolvers, and still makes 1911 pattern pistols.
You pay for the name. Colt uppers run about $930 against roughly $400 for the typical upper, and lowers about $450 against roughly $215.
Colt lost the M4 contract in 2013 over reliability problems, so the brand isn't spotless. But for a true M4 clone, nothing else carries the marking.
We'd buy a Colt for a clone build or a rifle you want to keep forever. For a plain shooter, the same spec costs a lot less elsewhere.
- Colt developed the M4 in the 1980s and still wins Army M4 and M4A1 contracts, including a 57.2 million dollar award in 2024.
