Why Cryptic Coatings

Cryptic Coatings was founded in 2014 by Gary and Karen Huffman in North Carolina. Gary spent 22 years in the Army and worked in coatings before starting it, and the company still does one thing: coated bolt carrier groups.

The Mystic Bronze BCG is the one you'll see most. Under the PVD finish it's an 8620 carrier and a Carpenter 158 bolt, HPT and MPI tested, with a chrome lined gas key staked on grade 8 screws. It weighs about 11.6 oz.

The coatings run from PVD titanium nitride and chromium nitride to CVD diamond-like carbon, in colors like Mystic Bronze, Silver and Black. Carriers come in 5.56, .308, .458 SOCOM, 6.5 Grendel and 7.62x39, plus low mass, 9mm and titanium versions.

A Cryptic carrier runs about $242 against roughly $199 for the typical bolt carrier group. It's the fourth most added BCG, in about 10% of builds that have one.

You're paying for the finish. Underneath, the steel and testing match a plain mil-spec carrier that costs far less. The coating buys faster cleaning, not a new level of reliability, and it still wants lube. A non titanium carrier that fails gets replaced, even for a second owner.

Stock is thin. In early October only about 34% of Cryptic listings across stores were in stock, so a specific color or caliber may take some looking.

We'd buy a Cryptic BCG if you shoot a lot and hate cleaning. Start with the Mystic Bronze 5.56 carrier, and skip it if that money would buy a better trigger.
