Why Midwest Industries
Midwest Industries was started in 2003 by two partners from precision machining, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Everything is made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty, and the pitch is plain: solid aluminum parts at a fair price.
The Combat Rail is the one most people buy. It's 6061 aluminum with a Type 3 hard coat, a heat treated 4140 barrel nut, 1.5 inches across outside and 1.3 inside, with two QD sockets. Lengths run 4.5 to 17 inches, and a 13.375 inch rail weighs 10.5 ounces.
The rest of the line covers the Combat Rail HD with a barrel nut twice as long, the Night Fighter with M-LOK on seven sides for lasers, drop-in quad rails, QD scope mounts, offset red dot mounts, AK Alpha parts, lever action stocks and MP5 mounts.
MI handguards cost right at the slot median, about $175, and it's the most common handguard, on about 39% of builds that have one. Its sights rank second among front sights and third among iron sight sets.
The trade-off is that the Combat Rail is plain. The full length top Picatinny adds weight you may never use, and the standard nut is the short one. If you hang a laser out front, the HD version's longer nut adds rigidity.
MI keeps branching out. At SHOT 2026 it showed revolver stocks, MP5 optic mounts and a handguard built for Lima 6 belt fed uppers, and it now sells a complete CRM HD rifle for just under $2,000.
We'd start with a Combat Rail on a first free float build. It's the safe, middle of the road handguard, and the money saved can go to the barrel.
- The Combat Rail is 6061 aluminum with a Type 3 hard coat anodized finish and a heat treated 4140 barrel nut.
- The Combat Rail measures 1.5 inches across the outside.
- All MI products are made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty.
