Why Smith & Wesson
Smith & Wesson came to ARs in 2006 with the M&P15, and the first ones were built by Stag Arms under the S&W name. Long gun assembly now happens in Maryville, Tennessee, while the Springfield, Massachusetts plant still does forging and machining.
The M&P15 Sport III is the current entry rifle. It has a 16 inch 4140 steel barrel with Armornite finish, 5R rifling and a 1:8 twist, mid-length gas, a 15 inch free float M-LOK handguard, and weighs 6.52 lbs. It lists at $799 and comes without sights.
It replaced the Sport II, which had carbine gas, a 1:9 twist and iron sights. Beyond that the line runs to the M&P15T, the M&P15-22 rimfire trainer, the M&P15 pistol, and complete lowers if you'd rather build the upper yourself.
Complete S&W rifles run about $729 against roughly $918 for a typical complete rifle, third in that slot at 10%. Its lowers go the other way, about $270 against roughly $213, since most come complete. Builds on an S&W lower often add an Aero upper.
The trade-off is that it's built to a price. The barrel is 4140 rather than the 4150 used in many mil-spec barrels, it's a light pencil profile, and you'll need to budget for sights or an optic before it's ready.
We'd buy a Sport III as a first AR if you want a working rifle out of the box for under $800. If you're building from parts, an S&W lower costs more than most, so start somewhere else.
- The M&P15T II has a free float 16 inch barrel with 5R rifling, a 1:8 twist and a mid length gas system.
- The M&P15 is an AR-15 in 5.56 NATO, and the first ones were made for S&W by Stag Arms in 2006.
