Why Forward Controls Design
Forward Controls Design is Roger Wang's shop, started in late 2014 after he left Battle Arms Development, which he co-founded. FCD treats the AR as a working tool, so its parts look plain on purpose and every one is machined from billet.
The EMR-A ambidextrous mag release shows the approach. It comes in standard and extended lengths, the extended sitting 0.09 inches longer, and runs a 10.9 pound spring against mil-spec's 6.85 pounds, so it takes a firmer, more deliberate press.
The rest of the line covers the ESF QD end plate, the Low Drag Forward Assist, the ACF ambi charging handle, a 50 degree ambi selector, an A5 buffer tube, castle nuts, stripped uppers, NP3 bolt carriers and handguards. FCD revises parts often, so version 2s and 3s are common.
FCD parts cost a bit more than the typical one. Its handguards run about $195 against roughly $175, and its end plates about $52 against $30. It's the seventh most added handguard brand, in about 4% of builds that have one.
The trade-off is fit with other controls. The EMR-A doesn't play well with Magpul BAD levers, some anti-rotation pins or widened bolt catches, so check what else is on your lower. The plain look isn't for everyone either.
We'd start with the ESF end plate or an FCD mag catch on a duty style build. Add the ambi controls if you shoot from both shoulders.
- FCD upgrades the parts your hands touch most, on the idea that a lot of small gains add up.
