Why Daniel Defense
Daniel Defense started in 2002 in Savannah, Georgia, and won a SOCOM rail contract in 2003. It now builds rifles, barrels and rails in Black Creek, Georgia, and makes the 14.5 inch barrel and gas block for SOCOM's URG-I upper.
The barrels are the reason to look. The 16 inch government profile is cold hammer forged 4150 CMV, chrome lined and heavy phosphate coated. The RIS II rail is part of SOCOM's SOPMOD Block II kit.
The rest of the line runs from the DDM4 V7 rifle to the DD5, plus the collapsible buttstock, grips and the H9 pistol. At SHOT Show 2026 it showed the DD4 X1, a rifle expected at roughly $3,000 with a DLC carrier and IR defeating Cerakote, built from a military contract.
A DD buttstock costs about $70 against roughly $53 and is the second most added stock, in 15% of builds that have one. DD barrels run about $327 against roughly $200 and land in 11% of builds with a barrel.
Price is the trade-off. A DD upper runs about $1,412 against roughly $400 for the typical upper, and the factory trigger is the weak spot at that money.
We'd start with the buttstock or a barrel, where the extra cost is smallest. Buy the complete upper when you want a factory built gun you never have to think about.
