Why DoubleStar
DoubleStar started in 1978 when Jack and Teresa Starnes sold reloading parts at gun shows in Winchester, Kentucky. Their son Jesse turned it into a rifle maker, and the family still runs it there.
It owns ACE, the skeleton stock and receiver block brand, which moved to Winchester when DoubleStar bought it in 2010. ACE stocks include the ARFX skeleton stock around $100, the AR-UL Ultra Lite around $165 and the Slim Stick.
DoubleStar builds AR-15 and AR-10 rifles and pistols, 1911s like the PhD at about $1,400, and M60 machine guns. Kits run from about $500 for an 11.5 inch SBR kit to about $750 for a 24 inch bull barrel kit.
It's a smaller name than the big AR brands, so local shops may not stock it. ACE skeleton stocks are light and simple, but they're not as adjustable as a carbine stock.
We'd look at an ACE stock for a light or retro build, and a DoubleStar kit if you want a family made rifle without going custom.
