About Steiner

Steiner is a German maker of military binoculars, now part of Beretta. On rifles it's tactical scopes and aiming lasers like the Atlas.

Founded 1947, Bayreuth, Germany, Made in Germany · Imported · Tactical scopes · Aiming lasers

Why Steiner

Steiner started making binoculars in Germany in 1947 and is part of Beretta Holding. Its lasers come from Steiner eOptics, the former Laser Devices, which builds the DBAL line and the military AN/PEQ-15A in Ohio.

The DBAL-A4 is the laser most people know. It's aircraft aluminum on a QD mount, runs on CR123A cells, weighs 12 to 14.5 oz with battery and is submersible to 20 m. It packs a visible laser, an IR pointer, IR illuminators and a white light in one box.

The newer ATLAS is the lighter answer: five emitters in a magnesium body under 7 oz, listed at about $4,025. On the optics side there's the T5Xi and T6Xi scopes, the T1Xi tube red dot and the MPS 2.0 enclosed pistol dot on the ACRO footprint.

Steiner makes the most added laser, in 59% of builds that have one, and the typical one sells for about $1,670. Builds with a Steiner laser carry an EOTech 63% of the time, which is the classic night vision setup.

The trade-off is cost against civilian power limits. A civilian DBAL-A3 runs a 0.7 mW IR pointer and 5 mW visible laser, against 50 and 80 mW on the military version. The DBAL-A4 is heavy, its warranty is two years, and the A3 zeroes with a coin instead of knobs.

Several DBAL-A4 versions are now discontinued, and the ATLAS went on sale to civilians in December 2025.

We'd buy Steiner if you already run night vision and want a proven IR laser. If the budget stretches, start with the ATLAS, since it's about half the weight of a DBAL-A4.

  • T5Xi scopes are assembled in Greeley, Colorado from finished lenses shipped from Steiner's German factory.
  • Military M series scopes are still made in Germany. The T, P and hunting lines are built in the USA.
