Why Harrington & Richardson

The old H&R made M1 Garands, M14s and Vietnam era M16s. The name now sits with the same group that owns Palmetto State Armory, and it's used for clone correct retro ARs with the period roll marks.

The M16A1 style rifle is the headline. It runs a 20 inch chrome lined 4150 barrel in 1:7 or 1:12 twist, a rifle length gas system, 7075-T6 A1 receivers and weighs about 6.7 pounds. Expect roughly $1,100 to $1,300.

You don't have to buy the whole rifle. H&R also sells A1 uppers, lowers and small parts with the historical markings, so you can put together a retro build yourself.

In builds, an H&R lower runs about $160 against roughly $215 for the typical lower. Uppers go the other way at about $650 against roughly $400, since they come as finished retro uppers.

Don't expect a luxury feel. The furniture on a tested rifle felt cheap and the front sight base casting showed small blemishes, though it ran well and shot around 1.6 MOA with good ammo.

If you want a retro AR that looks right without hunting down vintage parts, it's an easy pick. We'd grab the lower for the price and the roll marks.
