Why Hogue

Guy Hogue was a Los Angeles police officer who started making grips to fit his own hand in 1968. The company is still run by his family, and the AR parts follow the same idea: soft rubber that fills your hand.

The OverMolded AR-15 grip is the one to know. It's a thermoplastic elastomer that shrugs off oils and solvents, with finger grooves, gentle palm swells and Hogue's Cobblestone texture. It weighs 2.4 ounces, lists around $30 and reuses your factory grip screw.

There are beavertail and no finger groove versions of the grip, an M-LOK OverMolded Hybrid forend grip, and two OverMolded stocks: a collapsible one for mil-spec carbine tubes and a fixed one for A2 tubes.

Hogue grips cost a little more than the typical one, about $25 against roughly $20, and land on 7% of builds that have a pistol grip, fifth in the slot. Its stocks rank fourth, on about 9% of builds with a stock or brace.

The trade-off is size. The palm swell can feel big in a smaller hand, and on some lowers you have to trim the grip's tongue with a utility knife where it overlaps the trigger guard. No screw comes in the box, so keep the old one.

We'd start with the OverMolded grip if a hard polymer grip bothers your hand on long range days. If you've got small hands, try the no finger groove beavertail first.
