About Ruger

Ruger is one of the biggest American gun makers, and on the AR side it's known for the budget friendly AR-556. The MPR version gets a cold hammer forged barrel.

Founded 1949, Mayodan, North Carolina, Made in USA · Budget ARs · Owns Marlin and Anderson · Cold hammer forged

Why Ruger

Ruger is the largest gun maker in the US, founded in 1949 and now based in Mayodan, North Carolina, with plants in New Hampshire, North Carolina, Kentucky and Arizona. It bought Marlin in 2020.

On the AR side it's known for the budget AR-556. The MPR version adds a cold hammer forged 4140 chrome moly barrel with a nitride finish and M4 feed ramps.

In July 2025 Ruger bought Anderson Manufacturing, including its Hebron, Kentucky plant, and dropped the Anderson brand and its guns.

Ruger complete rifles hold about 3% of the complete rifle slot on GunPartPicker, at about $810 against roughly $920 for the typical rifle.

A factory rifle is easy, but you give up picking each part. If you want a working AR without a build, we'd look at an AR-556 MPR.

  • The AR-556 MPR has a cold hammer forged 4140 chrome moly barrel, a nitride finish and M4 feed ramps.
  • Ruger bought Anderson Manufacturing and its Hebron, Kentucky plant in 2025 and folded it in, so the Anderson name is gone.
