Why Hexmag

HEXMAG began in 2013 as a 3D design and printing project and sold its first mags in March 2014. It's a Virginia Beach shop, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, and the mags are made in the USA.

The Series 2 AR-15 mag is the product. It's reinforced polymer with a heat-treated 17-7 PH stainless spring and an orange anti-tilt follower, wrapped in the hex texture that gives the brand its name. It comes apart without tools, and a black thirty runs about $12.

The rest of the line stays close to mags. There are 10, 15 and 30 round AR mags, 20 round SR25 pattern .308 mags, carbon fiber mags rated 20% lighter than standard polymer, clear HEXVIEW mags and the HEXID colored follower system. Grip tape, grips, rail covers and HEXKOTE lube round it out.

The grips get used too. A HEXMAG grip ends up on about 4% of builds that have a pistol grip, eighth in the slot. On mags, a Series 2 thirty sits a few dollars under the $16 list price of a PMAG Gen M3.

The common gripe is fit. Some owners find HEXMAGs seat tighter than other brands and need a firmer push to lock in. Early mags drew feed lip complaints, and owners find the Series 2 lips better. The lifetime warranty covers defects, but normal wear and modifications aren't covered.

We'd buy two or three Series 2 mags and run them in your own lower before buying a stack. If they seat and drop clean, they're a cheap way to get colored followers and a grippier mag.
