Why Leupold

Leupold started in 1907 fixing survey gear and built its first riflescope in 1947. Every product meant to mount on a gun is designed, machined and assembled in the United States, and the lifetime guarantee covers the scope for any owner, even if you bought it used.

For an AR the Mark 5HD 2-10x30 is the one to know: first focal plane, a 35mm tube and an MSRP around $2,000, built for AR type rifles mostly inside 200 yards. The Patrol 6HD Gen 2 1-6x24 LPVO is 15.7 ounces with daylight bright illumination that shuts off after five idle minutes.

The rest of the line runs from the VX-Freedom hunting scopes to the VX-5HD, the VX-6HD Gen 2 with tool-free zero, and the Mark 4HD 1-4.5x24. Mark 5HD comes in bigger magnifications for precision rifles.

Leupold glass costs a lot more than the typical rifle scope, about $1,300 against roughly $400. It's still the fourth most common rifle scope, on about 7% of builds that have one.

The trade-off is price. You pay for the US build and the guarantee, and the Mark 5HD still uses Japanese lenses. Some reticle options cost extra, and the original Patrol 6HD's capped turrets lacked a crisp click, so it's easy to lose count while zeroing.

We'd buy Leupold when the rifle is a keeper and you want one scope for life. Start with the Patrol 6HD for a general purpose AR, or the Mark 5HD 2-10x30 if you shoot past 200 yards.
