Why Phase 5 Weapon Systems

Phase 5 began with a founder named Ken building one part in his garage to fix a problem, and a local shopkeeper asking how many he could make. Every part is made in America, and the designs aim at police and military shooters.

The Extended Bolt Release V3 is the part it's known for. It's one piece of heat treated 8620 steel, weighs 0.7 ounces and replaces a mil-spec bolt catch with the included roll pin, so you can drop the bolt from inside the trigger guard.

The rest of the line is controls and furniture: 45 and 90 degree ambi safeties with 6061-T6 levers on a heat treated steel core, the Ambi Battle Latch charging handle, mag releases, Hex buffer tubes, the Universal Mini Stock, brakes and M-LOK rails.

Its bolt catch is the second most added, in about 18% of builds that have one, at about $55 against roughly $15 for a plain catch. The ambi safety is third in its slot at about $45, right on the typical price.

The trade-off is cost and fit. You pay several times the price of a mil-spec catch, and it won't fit AR-10s, proprietary catches or receivers with a raised ridge under the hammer pin. The safety levers mount with screws that need blue thread locker.

We'd start with the EBR V3 on any AR-15 with a standard lower. Add the 45 degree safety if you want a shorter throw for about what a typical safety costs.

  • The ambi safety selector drops in to replace a mil-spec selector on AR-15 and AR-10 lowers.
  • The Ambi Battle Latch charging handle has thicker sidewalls, a stainless coiled spring pin and nickel boron coating.
  • Phase 5 parts sold on its site are made in the US.
