PSA Sabre 5.56 AK: Price, Specs, Mags and What Fits

PSA launched the Sabre 5.56 AK on schedule at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on Friday, September 25, at $1,099.99, with a Polish WBP core under PSA's own barrel and one magazine in the box. Here's what we'd buy for it today, then what PSA has confirmed and what still waits on the first owners.

What to buy for the Sabre 5.56 AK now

Most of the rifle sits on published interfaces, so these buys hold up whatever the first owners report. The magazine is the one pick that still carries a real catch.

1. Best magazine: a Polish WBP or FB Radom Beryl 5.56 magazine. We don't stock one yet.
2. Best suppressor mount: the Breek HUB One, about $80.
3. Best budget red dot: the Sig Romeo5 Gen II, about $135 to $150.
4. Best premium red dot: the Aimpoint Micro T-2, close to $1,000.

Best magazine: Polish WBP or Beryl

Buy Polish magazines first, because the front trunnion the magazine hooks into is WBP and the one magazine PSA ships is WBP too. The Thinline Weapons 5.56 AK table ticks Polish magazines for a Polish Beryl rifle, and nobody has published a closer fit list.

What we like

• The trunnion and the included magazine are both WBP, so the front lug should seat the way it does in a WBP Jack.
• TTAG ran Polish magazines through a WBP Jack 556SR in a 650 round test without a single malfunction.

Watch out for

• The magazine catch rides in PSA's own receiver, and no Sabre owner has reported a Polish magazine locking up yet.
• We don't carry any 5.56 AK magazine, so there's no price card for this pick.

Best suppressor mount: Breek HUB One

PSA installs a Plan B muzzle device and shows the rifle firing suppressed, so half the job is done before the box arrives. Plan B is Q's taper mount: it threads into the can and locks onto a Plan B style device, and the HUB One does that for HUB pattern cans.

What we like

• It uses the device PSA already installed, so you never touch the barrel threads.
• At about $80 in our merchant feeds, it costs roughly half what the Q Plan B Omega does.

Watch out for

• It's for HUB cans only, so an Omega pattern can needs the Q Plan B Omega further down this page.
• PSA hasn't published a list of suppressor mounts it has tested on its own device.

Best budget red dot: Sig Romeo5 Gen II

The Soviet Arms railed gas tube gives you a Picatinny section over the barrel, and it wants a small, light dot on a low mount. The Romeo5 Gen II ships with a low mount in the box, so you can bolt it on and zero the same day.

What we like

• The retailer listing says it includes the low mount, the height a gas tube rail wants.
• It runs about $135 to $150, and it's easy to find in stock.

Watch out for

• It's a plain 2 MOA dot with no circle, so look at the Primary Arms SLx MD-25 Gen 2 further down if you want a ring reticle.

Best premium red dot: Aimpoint Micro T-2

Pick the T-2 if you want the premium dot and the right mount height in one box. Aimpoint's standard mount puts the dot 20 mm above the rail, and Primary Arms sells that mount as the low height option.

What we like

• The standard mount already sits at the low height a gas tube rail calls for, so you don't buy a second mount.
• The dot is 2 MOA, and the Picatinny mount comes in the box.

Watch out for

• It costs close to $1,000, nearly the reported price of the rifle it sits on.
• Stock is thin, and most of our merchants show it out of stock as of this update.

What PSA has confirmed

Everything here comes from PSA's announcement video, its launch short and its launch blog post. Where a detail comes only from the product listing, we say so. PSA's site blocks our tools, so we're relying on Rifle Configurator's read of the page.

The core is Polish. The front trunnion, bolt, carrier, rear sight assembly and dust cover come from a WBP 5.56 parts kit. WBP is Poland's commercial Kalashnikov maker, while the Beryl comes from the military factory at FB Radom. Atlantic Firearms has imported WBP's Jack in 5.56 since at least 2023.

The parts that decide whether an AK locks up, feeds and lasts aren't new designs. The listing adds three more WBP pieces: the lower handguard retainer, the recoil spring assembly and the safety.

The barrel and receiver are PSA's. The barrel is 16 inches, cold hammer forged, chrome lined and made in house, where the 7.62x39 Sabre GF5 uses an FN barrel. PSA's videos don't give the twist or the thread pitch, but the listing reportedly gives a 1:7 twist and 1/2x28 threads, with a Sabre Plan B flash hider installed.

The receiver is dimpled, with swell neck rivets. PSA's blog calls the finish OD Green, while the listing names the rifle Moss Green/Burnt Bronze. The listing also adds a side scope mount and says the rear trunnion takes side folding stocks.

The rest matches the 7.62x39 rifle. You get an ALG trigger with the Lightning Bow shoe, which the listing calls the ALG AKT Enhanced. A Soviet Arms M-LOK lower handguard and railed gas tube come in Burnt Bronze. The B5 Systems grip and side folding stock come in RAL 8000 brown.

One magazine ships with it. PSA names a single 30 round WBP 5.56 magazine in the box where legal, and the listing says there's no cleaning rod. PSA hasn't said what else fits.

What fits the Sabre 5.56 AK

PSA hasn't published a compatibility list, so we built one from what's documented.

It draws on PSA's launch material, Rifle Configurator's read of the listing and the Thinline Weapons 5.56 AK magazine table. TTAG's WBP Jack test and the Q, Breek and Pioneer product pages fill in the rest. Every partial comes with its catch, and unconfirmed means nobody has reported it either way.

Why the magazine catch is the open question

An AK magazine hooks into the front trunnion and locks at the rear on the magazine catch. The Sabre's trunnion is WBP, so the front of the magazine well is Polish, and magazines that seat in a WBP Jack should seat here too.

The rear lock is PSA's. The WBP parts list, as Rifle Configurator read it, doesn't include the catch, and the catch rides in PSA's own receiver. RECOIL's 7.62x39 Sabre had a catch that stuck with both the included magazine and aftermarket ones, and PSA fixed it under warranty.

TTAG ran Bulgarian Circle 10, Polish and AC-Unity magazines through a WBP Jack 556SR without a single malfunction. Thinline's table doesn't cover Circle 10 or AC-Unity in a Polish rifle, though, so for those two you're leaning on one reviewer's Jack.

Thinline tracks more than ten 5.56 Kalashnikov magazine families, and they don't interchange freely. For a Polish Beryl rifle it ticks only Polish and AK-19 magazines. It leaves the Beryl cell blank for Circle 10 and AC-Unity, so read those blanks as untested.

Until PSA publishes a list or owners post what drops free, buy Polish WBP or Beryl magazines first and Bulgarian Circle 10 second. Wait on Yugo and Romanian magazines until somebody reports one working in a Polish magwell.

PSA's own feed sells AC-Unity AK556 magazines, and those ran in TTAG's Jack. Pioneer Arms makes a Polish style magazine but guarantees it only in its own rifles, and neither has an owner report in a Sabre yet.

The Loadout argued PSA would be prudent to ship at least two magazines, given the likely squeeze on 5.56 AK magazine supply. The listing still has one.

The paper trail

The 5.56 Sabre isn't PSA's first 5.56 Kalashnikov. PSA sold an AK-101 before it, and one owner's fix for that rifle points at a part in the new one.

In a July 2023 thread on The Outdoors Trader, a PSA AK-101 owner traced feeding and ejection failures to an undersized extractor spring and a shallow extractor scallop. The fix that worked was a Polish Beryl extractor and spring, because "the scallop on the face of the Beryl extractor is much deeper."

The new rifle ships with a Polish bolt from the factory. PSA hasn't said that's why, and it doesn't need to.

What owners say about WBP 5.56 cores

We can't reach Reddit from where we work, and The AK Forum and PSA's own forum block our tools. This section leans on the posts we could open and the published reviews. When we last went through the sources, nobody had posted a range report or a specialist review of the 5.56 Sabre.

The owners who post about WBP 5.56 rifles are happy with them. In The AK Forum thread "WBP in 5.56", started in September 2024 and archived in August 2025, nobody reports a reliability problem.

One member owns "2 WBP in 5.56, a rifle and a pistol and both are reliable and good to go." Another is "pleased with both my wbp fox, Jack 5.56 and fb radom beryl 5.56." TTAG's Jim Grant put 650 rounds through a Jack 556SR in 2023, across five kinds of magazine, and never had a malfunction.

The gas port is PSA's. Those owners run imported rifles on Polish barrels, but the Sabre gets PSA's own barrel, so PSA drilled the gas port. The listing doesn't say whether the piston is fixed or adjustable, so read the first owner reports before you change anything.

On the 7.62x39 Sabre, the reference is RECOIL. Russell Phagan's February 2026 review paid full retail at $1,099.99 and put a few hundred rounds through a GF5. He documented a stuck magazine catch, a front sight canted far enough that windage maxed out at 25 yards, and a handguard that shot loose inside 100 rounds.

PSA fixed all of it under warranty, and his verdict was "I'd purchase it again." Keep that quality control record in mind when you order the 5.56.

Why the 7.62x39 Sabre won't predict this one

The easy read says the 5.56 rifle is the 7.62x39 Sabre with a different barrel, so a year of GF5 owner reports tells you what to expect. The 7.62x39 Sabre uses a Romanian parts kit, though. The 5.56 rifle uses a Polish one built for a different cartridge, with its own trunnion, bolt and magazine well.

An AK Forum builder laid the families out in March 2025: "there are ak-74 pattern 5.56 AKs and AKM pattern 5.56 AKs." You've "got to stick with same pattern as far as front trunnion, bolt, carrier, barrel and rear sight."

Nothing learned about how a Romanian GF5 feeds or wears transfers to this rifle. What carries over is the receiver, the rivets, the trigger, the rail and the furniture, and those parts were never in doubt.

More parts that fit the Sabre today

Suppressors and mounts on the Plan B pattern

The device is already on the barrel, so you only need the suppressor side. That means a Plan B mount for a can you own, or a can with Plan B built in. The Q Plan B Omega, about $150, covers Omega pattern cans, and PSA's own Sabre BT5 comes in a Plan B version at around $800.

The Q Southpaw has the taper lock built in, though Q sells it to grab its own Cherry Bomb and Rear End mounts. Check that it seats on PSA's device before you buy one.

Hold off on a replacement muzzle device until you've seen the listing yourself. The reported 1/2x28 thread is the common AR-15 pitch, but we haven't confirmed it on PSA's own page. A ring reticle for the gas tube

Cheap 5.56 is the reason to own a 5.56 AK in the first place. We've listed a 62 grain M855 style load, a 62 grain FMJ, and M193 as the cheap 55 grain option.

A sling for a QD stock

The B5 stock on the 7.62x39 Sabre carries a QD cup, and RECOIL found a Magpul QD swivel finicky to latch in it. If your 5.56 stock matches, a two to one point sling with QD swivels is the safe buy either way.

What the listing settled, and what's still open

The product page answered most of what buyers were waiting on before launch. Here's what it settles, apart from the side mount, which we still can't see in PSA's video.

Settled:

1. Price. $1,099.99, sold out since launch. That's the same as RECOIL paid for a 7.62x39 GF5. Swapping the Romanian kit for a Polish one and the FN barrel for PSA's didn't move the number.
2. Thread and twist. A 1/2x28 thread and a 1:7 twist, with a Sabre Plan B flash hider installed.
3. Side rail. The listing names a side scope mount on the receiver.
4. Box contents. One 30 round WBP magazine where legal, and no cleaning rod.

Still open:

1. Magazine compatibility. PSA's affiliate feed carries AC-Unity AK556 magazines but no WBP magazine sold on its own, so a list is still what to ask for.
2. Weight and overall length. We haven't found either in any source we could open.
3. Gas. Whether the piston is fixed or adjustable, on a gas port PSA drilled itself.
4. Reliability. No owner range reports had surfaced in any source we could reach.

The 7.62x39 Sabre's problems were quality control at assembly, and they showed up inside the first box of ammunition. If the 5.56 rifle follows that pattern, the AK boards will know within a few weekends of the first deliveries.
