SIG P385: Specs, Price and What Fits

You can order a P385 today, and the CARRY costs 599 dollars.

That's the street price. SIG's retail MSRP for the same gun is 679.99, and the 599 figure every launch story repeats is what dealers actually charge. The COMP runs 749.99. Only those two models are orderable, and most listings are still preorders.

Most of you landed here from a search for the price, so we've put it first. Below that: every model, how it sizes up against the P365 and the P320, what fits it, and what the first people to shoot one have said.

How much does the P385 cost?

We checked dealer listings on September 26. SIG hasn't posted a price sheet of its own, so these are the MSRPs printed on retailer listings next to what those same stores charge.

A manual thumb safety doesn't change the price. Neither does the 10 round Massachusetts version.

The optic bundles are the interesting line. The CARRY with a SIG-LOC optic costs 500 dollars more than the bare gun. SIG's own XRAY5 in SIG-LOC PRO lists at 599.99 on its own, so the bundle saves you around a hundred dollars if you were going to buy SIG's optic anyway.

Where to buy one

We don't list the P385 yet. None of the merchant feeds we price from carry it today, and we won't put a gun on this page that we can't show you a live price for. When the big online stores add it, it'll show up on our product pages with every merchant side by side.

Until then, it's a dealer gun, and it's mostly a preorder. KYGUNCO and Bauer Precision list the CARRY at 599.99. Impact Guns is taking COMP preorders at 749.99. Nobody on the SIG forums had reported buying one by September 26, and one sigtalk member expects a month before they show up at gun counters.

Call your local shop anyway. Frog Bones had one on the counter before SIG had announced anything.

The five models

The P385 is built around an entirely new fire control unit, designed for this platform rather than carried over from the P320 or the P365. SIG pairs it with what it calls the Trigger Block, a patented flush faced trigger, and drops the whole thing into a MAGSTRAP grip module in small, medium or large. Controls are fully ambidextrous.

Weights include an empty magazine. The CARRY is 7.22 inches long and the COMP 7.9. SIG hasn't published the FULL or the COMPACT.

Every model is 5.64 inches tall and 1.32 inches wide, and comes in black or coyote brown. The CARRY wears XRAY3 day and night sights.

The recoil story is the one SIG leads with. A low bore axis plus the new SIG Recoil Dampening System, which SIG says cuts muzzle rise by 20% or more. On the MACH3D, the compensator takes that past 30% by SIG's own numbers. Treat both as manufacturer claims until somebody independent puts a timer on it.

P385 vs P365 vs P320

If you were hoping for a bigger P365, this isn't it. The P385 is a P320 sized duty gun.

Against the P365-XMACRO, the CARRY is six tenths of an inch longer, almost half an inch taller and a fifth of an inch wider. It also weighs 29 ounces to the XMACRO's 21.5. That's the difference between a gun you carry all day in a waistband and one you carry because you've decided to.

Against a full size P320, it's shorter and a little narrower, and it weighs about the same. If you own a P320 and like it, the P385 is the one to handle. If you carry a P365 and want more gun, look at the COMPACT when it ships.

Correction: your existing optic does fit

Before launch, this guide told you a SIG-LOC cut would most likely leave an optic you already own needing an adapter plate, or not fitting at all. That was wrong, and SIG's own product page says so in one sentence:

Pistol slides that are configured with SIG-LOC mounting footprints are still fully compatible with traditional top-mount reflex sights.

So a P385 slide takes a conventional top mounted sight. If you own an ACRO, an EPS Carry, an MPS or anything else on a published footprint, it goes on the gun.

The restriction runs the other way, and only the other way. A ROMEO-X SIG-LOC PRO is built exclusively for SIG-LOC PRO slides, so that optic won't transfer onto a conventionally cut pistol you already own.

Schematic. SIG-LOC drives its fasteners up from under the slide. That geometry is what buys the five points of contact, and the slide still accepts a conventional top mounted sight.

What SIG-LOC buys you is lockup. Five points of contact between slide and optic instead of two screws through the top, a lower deck height, and a longer focal length that flattens parallax. If you want that, you need the matching optic.

What fits the P385

Optics

A duty size gun wants an enclosed emitter sight. Enclosed housings seal the light path so lint, rain and snow can't block the emitter, and that's the failure mode that takes open sights out of service.

You've got two routes. Go SIG-LOC PRO and get the five point lockup, or mount anything you already own on a published footprint and save the money. SIG lists the XRAY5 at 599.99 in SIG-LOC PRO and 549.99 in SIG-LOC Compact.

We take the median in stock price across our merchant feeds, and it runs well under list. Budget 500 to 600 dollars for a duty grade enclosed sight. We reprice every card on this page nightly against those same feeds.

Magazines

Standard P320 magazines work, and that's the cheapest reason to pick this gun over a clean sheet platform. If you run a P320, you've got a magazine stash on day one.

One catch. The oldest P320 magazines, the ones with a round base pad, won't seat past the P385's metal magwell. SIG's answer is to pull the magwell off. Current flat base pad magazines go straight in.

Holsters

Your P320 holster won't fit. Neither will a P365 holster. SIG says so directly, and the P385's slide and frame are their own shape.

Safariland is first out of the gate. It lists the Incog X as available now and has the 6360RDS and 6390RDSO duty holsters, the Solis and a Ballast light bearing holster coming. ANR and BlackPoint have P385 holsters announced too. Buy a retention holster last, once your exact model and light combination is listed rather than the family name.

Lights

A light clamps to an accessory rail rather than to the model, so the P385 takes the lights already on the shelf.

Sights and magwells

SIG says P series dovetail iron sights fit, and so does the P320 AXG magwell. Nothing else in the aftermarket has a confirmed fit yet. P320 barrels don't fit, according to a SIG trainer posting on AR15.com, and he says threaded barrels are coming without a date.

What people who've shot it say

Nobody owns one yet. The only people who've shot a P385 got a gun at SIG NEXT, at a SIG Experience Center, or from a manufacturer. Here's what they reported, and what the forums are arguing about while they wait.

The people who've fired it

The best firsthand report so far comes from nhracecraft on SIGforum, who lives near the SIG Experience Center. He went in on September 23, field stripped a CARRY and shot it. He said the break "feels similar to the P320 Legion" and called the reset very positive. In the hand he compared it to a P365 Legion, with a slide noticeably narrower than a P320's.

He also confirmed the modularity works the way SIG says. A FULL upper goes on a COMPACT grip, and so does the MACH3D upper. The CARRY and FULL grips won't take the 15 round COMPACT magazine.

Thomas Higginbotham at Safariland put a couple of hundred rounds through early guns. He put the trigger at about 7 pounds and said the comp models shot very flat. He thought the COMPACT handled more like an XMACRO.

A member of SIG's training team, dbaird, has been answering questions on AR15.com. Weigh it accordingly, since he works for SIG. He says a demo gun passed 20,000 rounds with no failures or part changes, and he rates the trigger above every P365 he's shot.

What the forums keep saying

We read the P385 threads on SIGtalk, SIGforum, AR15.com, the 1911 Forum and CalGuns between September 22 and 26. The biggest ran past 300 posts in a day.

It's the P320 without the name. This comes up on every board, usually unkindly. One AR15.com member called it "the quiet replacement for the cursed 320." A lot of owners want a trade in program. Others point out that a trade in would hand plaintiffs an argument.

It's a bigger P365. Mike H in WA, who read the XRAY5 off the blurred teaser the week before, called it "an upscaled P365" on launch night. If you already own an XMACRO, several members couldn't see a reason to buy one.

The price is fair. Almost nobody complained. 599 dollars landed well below what the forums had guessed before launch.

The Trigger Block looks clever. Most posts on the flush trigger safety are curious or positive. The sharpest reply was a SIGforum member pointing out that SIG once argued a trigger safety was unnecessary on the P320.

Old P320 magazines need a fix. Owners worked out quickly that round hole base plates don't clear the magwell. The fix is a new base plate, or trimming the ears off the old one.

The case against it

The best skeptical post runs on the spec sheet. A SIGforum member worked out that the CARRY is no lighter than a P320 XCARRY and almost 6 ounces heavier than a Glock 45. His summary: "Pretty much the same gun without the proven track record."

Others want to see a second generation before they buy. Some won't buy SIG at all after the P320, including a SIGforum member with 15 years and 150,000 rounds on SIG duty guns. On AR15.com one member claimed reviewers edited failures to feed out of their videos. Nobody has shown one, and we'd treat it as unproven until a gun that failed turns up on camera.

How the leak did

We ran this page for a week on documents and dealer photographs. Here's the scorecard, including the part we got wrong.

Right. The forum consensus that it takes P320 magazines. Mike H in WA reading the new XRAY5 red dot off a deliberately blurred teaser. The broad call that it was a scaled up duty size gun rather than a small carry pistol. And SIG's own hidden prelaunch text naming the P385 as a SIG-LOC PRO host.

Wrong. The AR15.com reading that it was a P365-FUSE with an inline comp. And our own warning that your existing optic wouldn't fit.

Close. The retailer whiteboard said LAUNCH 9/24. SIG revealed on the 22nd and the announcement went public on the 23rd.

Does the P385 replace the P320?

SIG hasn't said so. The P320 stays in production for military, police and civilian buyers, and SIG says it has no plans to move the new trigger to other models. TFB called the P385 a separate platform. Recoil called it a replacement "at least in spirit" and stopped there.

The context everyone reads into it is the litigation. SIG is still defending the P320's fire control design in court, and the P385 ships with an entirely new FCU and a trigger safety blade that sits flush in the shoe. Nobody at SIG has connected those two things in public.

What's still unknown

Prices for the FULL, the COMPACT and the MACH3D. Dimensions for the FULL and the COMPACT. A trigger pull weight, which SIG hasn't published. And whether any department adopts it. Nothing in the launch material addresses law enforcement directly.
