AR Build Cost Calculator: How Much Does It Cost to Build an AR-15?

How much does it cost to build an AR-15? Pick caliber, barrel length, stock or brace and optic, then drag both edges of the price band from the cheap end to the top end. Every slot fills with the part builders add most that is in stock, priced live. The headline total is the core rifle, optics and extras are priced separately, and beside them sits what builders really pay per slot, measured from real part picks. Roll a random build, or open yours in the builder in one click. Computed from over 1 million AR parts selected on GunPartPicker since 2020.

Quick answer

  • The 14 core parts of a 14.5" 5.56 NATO AR-15, in stock and picked from the 25 to 75 percentile of what fits in each slot (around the median), cost $1,468 on GunPartPicker as of October 23, 2026.
  • The cheapest in stock core build that fits the same selections is $383.
  • Priced at what builders actually pay in each slot, the same core build is $1,949. That is the median price at the moment real builders selected each part on GunPartPicker.
  • Recent public GunPartPicker builds with a 14.5" 5.56 NATO barrel have a median parts total of $1,865 at today's best merchant prices.

Drag both edges of the price band and every slot refills with the part builders add most that is in stock, fits, and sits inside that slice. The headline is the core rifle; optics and extras are priced on their own line. Beside it, what builders really pay in each slot, from real part picks on GunPartPicker.

The last column is not a catalog number. It is the median price on screen at the moment a builder added a part to that slot on GunPartPicker. Where it sits well above the cheapest column, builders are choosing to spend there.

How the parts are chosen from real build data

Every slot starts from the in stock parts in its category. The selections filter that set to what physically fits: barrels by caliber and length (read from the product name, which is what the merchant actually sells), the gas tube by the gas length that barrel length calls for, the handguard by a length that clears the muzzle device and covers the gas block, the muzzle device by thread and caliber, the bolt carrier by cartridge, the mount by the scope's tube diameter.

Popularity is not a guess. It comes from over 1 million AR parts selected on GunPartPicker since 2020: every time a builder adds a part to a build it counts, and that is the number each slot is ranked by. The price band then keeps a slice of what fits, by percentile, computed for that slot and these selections: drag the lower edge to 0 and the upper edge to 100 and you get everything, put both handles either side of 50 and you get the median part. Inside the band the pick is the part builders add to real GunPartPicker builds most often, then the most reviewed, then the cheapest. If the band is empty the slot falls back to everything that fits and says so.

The “what builders pay” column is a second, independent measurement. Every time someone adds a part to a build we record the price that was on screen at that moment, so the median of that column is what people really spend on a trigger or a handguard, not what the catalog averages. A slot only reports it once it has at least thirty real picks behind it in the last twelve months; the rest read n/a rather than borrow a catalog number.

The headline total is the core rifle: the fourteen parts it does not fire without. An optic, a mount, backup sights and a light are real money but they are not the build, so they get their own total. That is also how build completion is measured on GunPartPicker, which keeps the number here and the number in the builder talking about the same thing.

The real builds section is the check on the whole thing: public builds with the same platform, caliber and barrel length, each priced at today's best merchant price for every part in it. That is the difference from a price range table. The totals are real carts of real parts at today's prices, and they change when a part sells out.

Roll a random build

A whole configuration from one number: caliber, barrel, back end, optic and price band, weighted towards what people actually configure. Each roll is a plain link with the seed in the URL, so the build you rolled is the build anyone you send it to sees.

What an AR build cost does not include

  • Magazines and iron sights
  • The FFL transfer fee on the lower
  • Sales tax and shipping
  • Armorer's wrench, vise block, punches, torque wrench
  • Lubricant and the ammo to zero it
  • A sling, a light, and everything else on the rail

Price it here, build it in the AR-15 Builder

Opens these picks in the AR-15 Builder as a saved build named above, priced at $1,414 today, ready to swap parts, share, or buy. Not carried over: lower parts kit (the builder has no slot for it; add it from the product page).

The AR-15 Builder checks caliber, platform, gas length, thread and mounting compatibility on every slot as you add parts, saves the build, and prices it across every merchant we track. The AR-10 and AR-9 builders check frame size and caliber the same way, so a small frame part on an AR-10 or a 5.56 barrel on a 9mm lower gets flagged. Open any card above and add it from the product page, or start from a community build and swap the parts you would change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to build an AR-15 in 2026?

This calculator prices it live from today's in stock parts. Set the caliber and barrel length above, drag the price band, and read the totals: the core rifle from your band, what builders actually pay for those slots, and the cheapest in stock parts that fit. All of them move daily with merchant prices, which is why this page does not print a fixed number in its text.

Is it cheaper to build an AR-15 or buy one?

Buying wins at the bottom of the market. A complete budget rifle usually undercuts the cheapest parts build because the maker buys barrels and receivers by the thousand. Building wins once you want a specific barrel, trigger or handguard, because you pay for the parts you care about and mil-spec for the rest.

What parts does a complete AR-15 build need?

Stripped lower, lower parts kit, trigger, pistol grip, buffer tube assembly, stock or brace, stripped upper, barrel, gas block, gas tube, handguard, muzzle device, bolt carrier group and charging handle. That is the list this calculator fills. An optic and mount are optional slots.

What is not in the total?

Magazines, iron sights, the FFL transfer fee on the lower, sales tax and shipping, the armorer's wrench, vise block and punches, lubricant, and ammo to zero it.

How are the parts chosen?

Each slot is filtered to what fits your selections: barrel by caliber and length, gas tube by the gas length that barrel calls for, handguard by length, muzzle device by thread, BCG by cartridge, mount by scope tube. The price band then keeps a slice of that set by percentile, computed for that slot: put both handles either side of 50 and you get the median part, drag them to the ends and you get everything. Inside the band the pick is the part builders add most, then the most reviewed, then the cheapest. Only in stock parts are considered.

What does the price band do?

It has two edges, both draggable, and it works on percentiles rather than dollars. The parts that fit a slot are sorted by price and the band keeps the slice between your two handles, so 0 to 25 is the cheap quarter of what fits that slot and 40 to 60 is the parts either side of the median. It is computed per slot for your selections, not over the whole catalog, so a budget 16 inch 5.56 barrel means the cheap end of 16 inch 5.56 barrels.

What do builders actually pay for each part?

Every time someone adds a part to a build on GunPartPicker we record the price that was on screen at that moment. The median of those prices, per slot, is the last column of the money table and the second headline total. It is a different measurement from the catalog: it says what people choose to spend on a trigger or a handguard, not what triggers average. A slot reports it only once it has at least thirty real picks in the last twelve months.

Why is the headline total lower than everything added up?

The headline is the core rifle: the fourteen parts it does not fire without. An optic, a mount, backup sights and a light are real money but they are not the rifle, so they are totalled on their own line and added in a separate figure. That is also how a finished build is counted on GunPartPicker, so the two numbers agree.

What does rolling a random build do?

It fills every selection from one seed: caliber, barrel length, back end, optic and price band, weighted towards what people actually configure. The seed goes in the URL, so the build you rolled is the build anyone you send the link to sees, and changing any control afterwards takes over from the roll.

Why is a slot empty?

Nothing in stock matches the selections. Lower parts kits and short barrels go in and out of stock week to week. Widen the price band, try the next barrel length, and check the products page for that category.

Can I buy a complete lower and just build the upper?

Yes, and it is often the cheaper path. A complete lower replaces the lower, parts kit, grip, buffer tube and stock slots. Add those five prices up and compare them to a complete lower on the products page.

Do I need a gunsmith to assemble it?

No. An armorer's wrench, a vise with an upper receiver block and a torque wrench cover the upper. The only precision step is torquing the barrel nut and timing the gas tube hole. The lower is pins, springs and a castle nut.
