The genuine KAC RAS MRE had no offer in stock, so Daniel Defense's RIS II stands in for the rail.
A Knight's Armament employee wrote in 2010 that soon after 9/11, M4A1 carbines in Afghanistan wore a long KAC rail and a Schmidt & Bender Short Dot. He never said whose.
Cloners say Delta Force and call it the Delta MRE, after the rail. We rebuilt it from KAC's archived pages, two retired Delta NCOs and owner builds, then priced what you can buy today.
What a Delta MRE clone copies
A Delta MRE clone copies a period M4A1, or a 16 inch recce M4, under Knight's RAS MRE. That rail free floats the barrel and leaves the fixed front sight base in a cutout.
Part number, weight and price from KAC's own web store, archived 21 October 2008. The discontinued date is a KAC representative's March 2008 forum post. None of these figures comes from a Delta or Army record.
| Metric | Value |

| KAC store price, Oct 2008 | $394.80 |
| Called discontinued | Mar 2008 |
MRE is the rail, not the rifle
No source gives the carbine an official designation. KAC sold the part as the RAS MRE, and cloners borrowed the name.
Did Delta Force really use the MRE?
Two credible witnesses come close. Neither says it outright.
From Delta's recce rifles to the first extended rail
Larry Vickers, a retired Delta master sergeant, wrote in 2015 that the unit's sniper troops began recce rifle work in the early 1990s, after Operation Just Cause. Retired Sergeant Major Daryl Holland's recce rifle was a 16 inch M4 tuned to about half MOA.
Vickers says it wore an early SR-25 carbon fiber tube, a common Delta modification that led to the KAC MRE, which he calls the first extended length rail of its kind.
Afghanistan after 9/11: an M4A1 with MRE and Short Dot
KAC's Kevin B wrote in 2010 that soon after 9/11, "elements operating in Afghanistan" found an M4A1 with the MRE and a Short Dot couldn't reach from the close fight to long shots in villages and mountains.

No source says Delta issued the MRE
We found no document, period photo or first hand statement that Delta fielded the rail, and a KAC representative credited the concept to "Dave L (Cold Blue)". So you're building a plausible configuration, not a documented one.
Delta MRE variants, from recce M4 to HK416
Three rifles get lumped together: Holland's recce M4, the MRE carbine and the HK416D.

Recce M4, early MRE and late MRE: telling them apart
Holland's recce M4 came first, with its SR-25 tube and a Japanese 1.25 to 4x Microdot. Vickers calls that scope Delta's stopgap after Mogadishu, the fight in our Gordon carbine clone build and Black Hawk Down CAR-15 build.
For an early MRE, forum members favor a government profile barrel. Wikipedia dates the SOCOM profile to 2004, so if you want one, build a late MRE.
The HK416D that replaced it, and the RIS II copy
Marine Corps Times said in February 2007 that HK's 416 was ready in 2004, after tests with Delta's help. Wikipedia dates Delta's switch to March 2005. A KAC representative said Daniel Defense won SOPMOD Block II with a knockoff of the MRE.
Our CAG HK416 clone build and LVAW clone build cover the later rifles.
Delta MRE parts list: the period part and what to buy
We built ours from the sources below and a 2019 owner clone.

The Delta MRE clone parts we list, laid out overhead. Some, including the KAC MRE, were out of stock on 27 September 2026. Product photography is supplied by the listed merchants through their affiliate feeds.

How each part is graded: evidence and availability
Only two rows rest on strong evidence. KAC's pages document the rail, and owners and a KAC representative agree the front sight base stays. Ammunition is moderate, and the rest is assumed from Kevin B's "M4A1" or taken from clones.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Exact | We list the period part or its current version |
| Equivalent | A stand in that does the same job |
| Budget | The cheapest part that works |
| Missing | We don't stock it yet |
| Unobtainable | Military only, never sold to civilians |
The lower receiver group
Lower receiver: semi auto Colt pattern, not an M4A1
No source names the lower's maker, and a select fire M4A1 lower is a machine gun receiver. Both cards are stand ins: Colt's LE6920 carbine gives you a Colt lower and a 16 inch upper with a front sight base, and PSA's stripped lower needs a parts kit.
Trigger: semi auto only, and the Geissele question
Nobody documents the MRE's trigger. Vickers says KAC played a big role in the enhanced triggers Delta's recce work produced, and a forum member notes Geissele triggers didn't exist in 2001 to 2003. The cards are semi auto stand ins.
Stock and pistol grip: M4 collapsible and A2
Neither is documented, so an M4 collapsible stock and an A2 grip are the default guess. A 2019 clone used a Colt stock its builder calls an N1. Colt's own had no offer, so Luth-AR's stands in.
The upper receiver group
Upper receiver: Colt M4A1 flat top
A Colt flat top is the assumption, though no source names the maker. Of Colt's no handguard uppers, only the 16 inch LE6920CK-NHG was in stock, at $658.21. Colt's 14.5 inch LE6921 upper group, with carrier and sights, was in stock at $775.99. Read the legal section before a 14.5 inch upper meets your lower.
Barrel: 14.5 inch carbine gas, or the 16 inch recce
A 14.5 inch 1 in 7 barrel is the assumption, and Holland's 16 inch length needs no paperwork. Colt's barrels had no offer in stock, so LMT and Ballistic Advantage stand in, and only LMT's listing says an A2 base comes fitted. Our AR-15 barrel length guide compares the lengths.
Gas system and front sight base: left in place
Here the evidence is strong. The standard fixed front sight base stays pinned in the MRE's open top channel, over a carbine length gas tube.
Bolt carrier and charging handle: Colt, M16 profile
An M16 profile carrier is the assumption, and it's legal in a semi auto rifle. The 2019 clone ran Colt's carrier and handle, but Colt's carrier was out of stock and we don't list the handle alone. BCM, LBE and Expo stand in.
Backup sights: KAC 600 meter flip up rear
The rear isn't documented. KAC's standard 600 meter flip up is P/N 98474, per Kevin B, and a 2009 owner's MRE ran a KAC 600 meter rear. KAC's store called the micro rear, 25650, new in October 2009, too late for an early build.
The KAC RAS MRE rail and what fits it
The rail makes the rifle, and it's the hardest part you'll buy. Our KAC RAS MRE product page tracks the one listing we have.
Which KAC and DD rails clear a front sight base
Fits means the rail goes on with the carbine's fixed front sight base still in place. From KAC's 2006 and 2009 catalogs and archived store pages, KAC staff posts on M4Carbine.net, owner reports and Wikipedia.
3 of 5 fit the carbine barrel with a front sight base outright, and 1 more fit with a catch.
- RAS MRE, P/N 21166Fits. Free floats, with the sight base standing in an open channel on top.
- Cut down M4 FF RAS with earsFits. About 300 made from leftover MREs, per KAC's Kevin B. The ears go around the sight base.
- M4 RAS, P/N 98064Fits, with a catch. KAC's catalogs say the user can install it on the GI barrel, but it doesn't free float.
- Mk 12 Mod 1 FF RAS, P/N 21318, 11.27 inWon't fit. KAC's 2006 catalog says the flash suppressor, front sight and barrel nut come off first.
- M4A1 FSP RIS II, 12.25 inFits. Free floats with a sight base cutout. First issued in 2008, per Wikipedia.

Model A, Model B and the 21166 part numbers
KAC's store listed RAS MRE Model "A" (Long) in October 2008 as P/N 21166-2, at $394.80. By October 2009 the title read 21166-1, at $508.14. Kevin B says the A had the rail and the B a tube spacer, and nobody knows which Delta used, if either.
Installing it: armorer fit before any pin and weld
KAC marked it armorer install, and its archived listing gives no instructions. Fit the rail before you pin a muzzle device, and ask a gunsmith whether the front sight base comes off. One owner notes the front section flips to put a rail on top for a light.
Muzzle device and the Knight's suppressor
Muzzle device: KAC M4QD or Triple Tap
KAC's M4QD, P/N 93048, the NT4 mount, is the usual assumption, and the 2019 clone ran a Triple Tap. KAC says today's Triple Tap is additive manufactured Inconel, so it may differ from older ones. BCM's extended A2 is the budget pick for pin and weld. We don't have its length, so measure.
Suppressor: KAC NT-4 on clones, undocumented on MREs
Holland's can was "made by Knight's", but his rifle predates the MRE. The 2019 clone used an NT-4, and KAC lists the QDSS NT4, PN 96062-1, as out of stock. We list it, out of stock too, and the newer NT4 PRG is in stock.
Optics, lights and period accessories
Optic and mount: Short Dot, or an EOTech on a riser
The M4A1 Kevin B describes wore a Schmidt & Bender Short Dot. Vickers says the Short Dot began when he approached Schmidt & Bender on the unit's behalf. Stills said to show Delta in November 2001 show EOTech style sights. The 2019 clone ran an EOTech 551 on a LaRue LT101. We carry the LT101 but not the 551, so the other optic cards stand in.
Light and foregrip: SureFire 6P and the gangster grip
Vickers says Delta wanted longer tubes partly to mount lights and lasers. The 2019 clone hung a SureFire 6P in a homemade "gangster grip" made from a scope ring. Nobody has confirmed KAC made such a grip, and KAC's 97098 forward grip isn't tied to Delta. The cards stand in.
Laser, bipod and sling on the clones
The 2019 clone's AN/PEQ-2 is military equipment, so you'll need a civilian laser. Its builder also added a Harris bipod on a KAC mount and a KAC QD sling mount. The Harris model isn't named, so the S-series swivel bipod below is a guess. KAC's mount and end plate are out of stock, and BCM's QD end plate stands in.
Ammunition: Mk 262 and 77 grain match loads
Vickers says Black Hills and Hornady loadings came out of Delta's push for better ammunition, and Kevin B calls the 77 grain Mk 262 newly adopted after 9/11. No load is tied to MRE carbines, so these are commercial match loads.
The civilian legal path to a Delta MRE clone
Build a semi auto AR-15 dressed as a period M4A1. Auto sears, auto triggers and three position lowers are machine gun parts, legal only on registered pre 1986 guns.
14.5 inch barrel: SBR or a pinned device to 16 inches
A 14.5 inch barrel is a short barreled rifle unless a permanently attached muzzle device brings it to 16 inches. ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing SBR approval and registration, but some states ban SBRs or only allow registered ones, so check yours before you keep it short. A 16 inch barrel avoids the question.
KAC muzzle devices alone stop short of 16 inches
KAC lists the Triple Tap as adding 1.25 inches, about 15.75 inches on a 14.5 inch barrel, and gives no added length for the M4QD. Pinned alone, neither gets you there, so measure any device you pin.
Suppressors, IR lasers and state law
ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing approval and registration for suppressors, but some states ban them or only allow registered ones. Our guide to what changed for suppressors covers the paperwork. Swap the PEQ-2 for a civilian legal laser, and check your state's rules on muzzle devices, collapsible stocks and magazines.
What you can buy today and what is unobtainable
On 27 September 2026, the simplest route that priced end to end from in stock offers was Colt's 16 inch LE6920 with Daniel Defense's RIS II.
Lowest in stock offers in our merchant feeds on 27 September 2026, before an optic, light or laser. The genuine KAC MRE had no offer in stock. A 14.5 inch route is an SBR unless a pinned device brings it to 16 inches, so we priced the 16 inch one.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Colt LE6920 host | $957.13 |
| DD M4A1 FSP RIS II | $516 |
| KAC M4QD and micro rear | $264.99 |
| 16 inch core total | $1,738.12 |
Add the EOTech 552 and you're at $2,417.12. On GPP, 24 carts held a front sight cutout rail between 14 December 2025 and 7 July 2026. Of those December to July carts, we set aside 10 as seeded, and none of the other 14 passed our check for a matching lower, upper and barrel.
Finding a real KAC MRE, and spotting airsoft copies
Owners bought MREs reissued through KAC's Vault line, announced in January 2018. A 2021 forum post says those rails were dropped again. Airsoft replica MREs rank in the same searches, so make sure the listing names Knight's Armament and P/N 21166.
Daniel Defense M4A1 FSP RIS II as the stand in rail
Daniel Defense's 12.25 inch M4A1 FSP RIS II is the closest layout in production, from $516. Our M4A1 Block II clone build covers it, and the M4A1 Block I clone build the KAC RAS before it. Centurion's C4 keeps the sight base for less but doesn't look the part.

What the internet gets wrong about the Delta MRE
Most errors trace to marketplace listings, airsoft blogs and one Wikipedia line.

What MRE stands for: three versions, no source
You'll read More Real Estate, Modular Receiver Extension and Modular Rail Extension. We found no KAC or period source for any of them, so we don't print one.
The MRE is not the Mk12 Mod 1 rail
They're different KAC parts. KAC's 2006 catalog gives the Mk 12 Mod 1 rail as P/N 21318, 11.27 inches, and says the front sight comes off to fit it. KAC's 2009 store labeled both "(Long)".
See our Mk12 Mod 1 clone build for the rifle that wears 21318, and our SEAL Recce rifle clone build for the SEALs' recce rifle.
Daniel Defense did not invent the front sight cutout
The MRE came first. One owner had his in 2003, and Wikipedia, citing McNab, dates the RIS II's first issue to 2008. The knockoff remark is a competitor's view, not a finding.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a Delta MRE?
- Delta MRE is a cloner's name for an early post 9/11 M4A1 carbine under Knight's Armament's RAS MRE, a free float quad rail with a cutout that leaves the fixed front sight base in place. MRE names the rail, not the rifle. Retired Delta NCO Larry Vickers says the rail grew out of a Delta modification, but we found no document or confirmable photo showing the unit issued it.
What does MRE stand for on the KAC rail?
- Nobody we found can say. Online you'll see More Real Estate, Modular Receiver Extension and Modular Rail Extension, and none of them traces to Knight's Armament or a period document. KAC's own web store sold the part as the RAS MRE Model A (Long), and a KAC representative called it the FF RAS MRE. Until KAC confirms an expansion, treat all three as guesses.
Did Delta Force actually use the KAC MRE rail?
- The evidence points that way without proving it. Larry Vickers, a retired Delta master sergeant, wrote that fitting SR-25 free float tubes to M4s became a common Delta modification and led to the KAC MRE. KAC's Kevin B described M4A1s with the MRE and a Short Dot in Afghanistan soon after 9/11, but he named no unit. We found no issue record or confirmable photo.
Is the KAC MRE rail still made?
- Not as far as we can tell. A KAC representative called it discontinued in March 2008, though KAC's store still listed it in stock in October 2009. KAC reissued it through its Vault line, announced in January 2018, and a September 2021 forum post says the legacy FF RAS rails were dropped again. The one listing in our feeds, P/N 21166-2, was out of stock on 27 September 2026.
What barrel does a Delta MRE clone need?
- A carbine gas barrel with a standard fixed front sight base, because the MRE's top rail is cut to clear it. A 14.5 inch 1 in 7 M4A1 barrel is the usual assumption. Experienced forum members think a government profile suits an early build better than the SOCOM profile, which Wikipedia dates to 2004. A 16 inch barrel matches Holland's recce M4 and needs no SBR paperwork.
Is the KAC MRE the same as the Mk12 Mod 1 rail?
- No. KAC cataloged them as different parts. The Mk 12 Mod 1 free float RAS is P/N 21318, 11.27 inches long, and KAC's 2006 catalog says fitting it means removing the flash suppressor, front sight and barrel nut. The MRE is P/N 21166 and keeps the fixed front sight base in a cutout. KAC's 2009 store labeled both parts (Long), which may explain why people confuse them.

- Planning toolAR Build Cost CalculatorHow much does it cost to build an AR-15? Pick caliber, barrel length, stock or brace and optic, then drag both edges of the price band from the cheap end to the top end. Every slot fills with the part builders add most that is in stock, priced live. The headline total is the core rifle, optics and extras are priced separately, and beside them sits what builders really pay per slot, measured from real part picks.
