Sometime around 2012, the HK416Ds cloners tie to Delta Force turned tan. They call them gold guns: 10.4 inch piston rifles with Geissele rails, EOTech sights and SureFire lights.

We rebuilt the rifle slot by slot and matched every part against our catalog on 27 September 2026. You'll see what you can buy, what's gone and which popular picks are wrong.

What a CAG HK416 clone copies

A CAG HK416 clone copies the 10.4 inch HK416D that Delta Force fielded, in the tan, Geissele railed form cloners date to about 2012 to 2014. The unit's names include 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta and CAG.

HK416 D10RS specs: 10.4 inch barrel, 1 in 7 twist

D10RS is the HK416D with a 264 mm barrel, or 10.4 inches; Vickers and Marine Corps Times call it 10 inch. Wikipedia gives a 1 in 7 twist and cold hammer forging, and Guns & Ammo says it's chrome lined.

The action is HK's short stroke piston, adapted from the G36. We found no HK source for what D or RS means.

Why cloners call the tan rifle the gold gun

The gold is anodizing. A clone receiver maker says HK's RAL8000 hardcoat runs from light yellow to bronze, with two to four shades on one rifle. Some cloners say tanodized.

No HK or Army document describes the finish. The claim that HK sold tan 416Ds only to Delta rests on one forum member.

The HK M4: a Delta request, an HK design

Larry Vickers, then Delta's weapons research NCO, dates the project to 2001, when HK's Jim Schatz raised improving the M4. Guns & Ammo dates the team to 2000.

HK had offered the program to others with no takers. Delta lent it M4s at no cost after a legal review, and HK adapted the G36 piston. Guns & Ammo and HKPro call HK's Ernst Mauch its father.

The unit wanted a rail that came off for gas system access and kept IR laser zero. HK named the result the HK M4 and renamed it after Colt sued.

Adopted in 2004, 2005 or 2006: sources disagree

After a 15,000 round endurance test of an early production 10 inch carbine, Delta ordered several hundred 10 inch rifles. Vickers told Marine Corps Times the unit bought the first 500.

The date depends on who you read: 2004 per Marine Corps Times, March 2005 per Wikipedia, and 2006 for JSOC fielding per Guns & Ammo. Military.com reported in 2007 that Delta and DEVGRU bought their 416s with their own funds.

What replaced the HK416 in Delta is not public

No official or press source names a successor. A September 2026 HKPro post says the unit moved to the SIG Spear LT after a Geissele and SureFire bid fell through. Other members dispute parts of it.

Wikipedia credits Delta with the 2015 Hawija and 2019 Baghdadi raids, but no public photo we found shows the rifles. Our LVAW clone build and Delta MRE clone build cover rifles people link to the unit.

Early black rifles on HK's quad rail

The first rifles, from about 2004, were black on HK's free floating quad rail. A clone vendor's survey of over 100 photos puts metal port covers on 2006 and older uppers. The black BRN-4 uppers we list suit this look.

The 14.5 inch rifle cloners pair with a Vortex 1-6x

Cloners report a second configuration on a 14.5 inch barrel. One says a Vortex 1-6 in a Geissele mount is correct, and the enthusiast list has a Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24 without naming a barrel.

No caption or document confirms the pairing. That cloner calls his mount a Geissele lithium alloy mount and gives no part number. The closest match we list is Geissele's Super Precision mount for Vortex 1-6x scopes in DDC, SKU 05-329S, made from 7075 aluminum. The HD-E Razor we list is an equivalent.

The lower receiver group

Most of this group is select fire or scarce.

Lower receiver: 416D pattern clones, semi auto only

The issued HK416D lower is select fire, so you'll build on a semi auto AR-15 lower. HKPro members use 416D pattern clones from INTLMILCO, STS and Gigliotti, and some name IPM, which we couldn't confirm.

We stock none of them, and owners say the BRN-4 lower has been out of stock for years. The cards are budget stand ins.

Trigger: Geissele SSF issued, HK MR 556 for civilians

The enthusiast list says Geissele HK416 SF. Geissele calls it the Super Select-Fire SOPMOD HK416 trigger, SKU 05-125, sold by phone only.

Its semi auto counterpart is the HK MR 556 trigger, SKU 05-220, with the same published 4.25 to 4.75 lb semi pull. Geissele says it fits the MR556 and semi auto 416s, and it's the equivalent card. The SSA is your budget pick for a standard AR-15 lower.

Trigger guard and selector: HK originals are scarce

Cloners call HK's tan flat guard a rare original, and no merchant in our feeds sells one. The issued selector was a single sided HK auto lever, and a cloner who reports seeing over two dozen CAG rifles never saw an ambidextrous one. You'll need semi auto parts anyway, so the budget cards are an aluminum guard to refinish and LMT's single sided safety.

Buffer tube and buffer: HK's heavy tungsten buffer

Guns & Ammo and Vickers describe a heavier tungsten filled buffer and a stronger spring, and cloners describe a tan HK tube. We list HK's black tube, out of stock on 27 September, and its spring, but not the buffer.

Some owners report commercial spec HK tubes binding in mil spec SOPMOD stocks. Cloners use Geissele's DDC tube instead, so both cards are Geissele's.

Stocks and grip: tan LMT SOPMOD and an HK grip

The enthusiast list and cloners agree on a tan LMT SOPMOD, with Magpul's CTR and STR in FDE as listed variants. Both cards are exact.

The grip is murkier. The list says HK V4 in RAL8000, but we found no HK source for a V4, and cloners say RAL7008. We don't stock HK grips, so you get equivalents, Tango Down first since a cloner says HK sourced early grips there. The Magpul MOE is the budget pick.

The upper receiver group

Your clone swaps Brownells BRN-4 parts in for HK's contract upper, barrel and carrier.

Upper receiver and port cover: tan HK416D parts

The enthusiast list calls it an OTB upper. Wikipedia puts HK's over the beach drainage in the carrier and buffer, though, and we found no HK document for an OTB upper. The polymer port cover is RAL8000 per the enthusiast list and RAL7008 per cloners. Our card is HK's RAL7008 cover, which had no in stock offer on 27 September.

The BRN-4 cards are equivalents. The 10.4 inch assembled upper is black and was out of stock on 27 September, and the 16 inch kit had one offer.

Barrel: HK 10.4 inch, profile undocumented

Length, twist, forging and chrome lining are documented. The profile isn't. Vickers says a profile 7 ounces lighter arrived after fielding, the enthusiast list says lightweight, and one HKPro poster says medium from the AG date code.

We list no HK barrel. The card is BRN-4's 16 inch chrome lined barrel, an equivalent you can run with no NFA paperwork.

Gas block: fixed, vented on later date codes

The issued block is fixed, with no user adjustable regulator. One owner sorts police trade in uppers by HK date code: AE to AI non vented, AK and BA to BD vented, BE and BF slimline vented. The piston comes installed in assembled BRN-4 uppers and MR556 rifles, so you'd buy one only as a spare. Our cards are HK's MR556A1 piston and BRN-4's piston.

Bolt carrier group and charging handle: HK or Geissele

HK made the key carrier parts itself and added a firing pin safety after slam fires with some non mil spec ammunition, per Vickers. Claims that Geissele made bolts for the unit are unverified. The BRN-4 carrier group and bolt are your equivalents.

The enthusiast list names HK's tan handle, which no retailer in our feeds sells, or Geissele's DDC Airborne Charging Handle. The ACH card is that listed variant.

The Geissele SMR HK rail that defines the CAG gun

The tan SMR is what makes a 416 read as the CAG gun, and you can still buy it. Geissele's SOCOM upper is in our M4A1 URGI clone build.

Handguard: Geissele 10.5 inch SMR HK in DDC

The enthusiast list calls it a 10 inch SMR. Geissele catalogs the 10.5 inch Super Modular Rail HK, P/N 05-190, at 9 3/8 inches actual, and sold the tan Desert Dirt Color version as SKU 05-190S.

A 2017 collector history says Geissele built it around 2011 for an organization replacing HK's quad rail, with Rev A at SHOT 2012. Neither names the unit.

The DDC rail is exact, then black. No source confirms BRN-4 fit, so ask the seller, and beware counterfeit SMRs.

Rev A, Rev B and the black SMR question

The enthusiast list has Rev A in sand and Rev B in DDC. Cloners say most CAG photos show a five vent Rev B in a lighter sand shade, and current rails have four vents.

One HKPro member says SEAL and 24th STS 416s ran black Rev B rails. So the rail alone can't prove you're looking at a CAG gun.

Muzzle device and suppressor: the Fast Attach pairing

The enthusiast list pairs one muzzle device with two cans that need different mounts.

Muzzle device: SureFire FH556-212A

The FH556-212A is SureFire's flash hider and adapter for its older Fast Attach cans, and one HKPro reply says US 10.4 inch uppers are 1/2x28. It's the exact card, though you couldn't buy one on 27 September.

The list also names an SFCT FH556 we couldn't identify. The SOCOM 4 prong card is an equivalent for RC cans.

Suppressor: SureFire FA212, and why RC cans will not fit

The enthusiast list names a Fast Attach FA212 in FDE, which locks onto the FH556-212A. It also lists a SOCOM556-RC, and an HKPro BRN-4 builder says his RC can wouldn't lock on. No merchant in our feeds sells an FA212.

If you want a can today, run an RC series can on an RC mount like the 4 prong, and check SureFire's fit chart. Both cards are equivalents and NFA items; see our best 5.56 suppressors.

Sights and optics: KAC, EOTech and the G33

You can buy nearly all of the aiming kit. Only the riser is missing.

Rear and front sight: KAC 600 meter micro flip ups

The enthusiast list names KAC's 600 meter rear and front sights in standard or micro size. An HKPro member says the unit used KAC flip ups. On early SMRs a micro front folded below horizontal, per the collector.

Both micro cards are exact. The rear had offers on 27 September, and the front didn't.

Optic, magnifier and riser: XPS3, G33 and Wilcox .410

The optic is a tan or FDE EOTech XPS3-0, and cloners call surplus issued ones the hardest part to find. The list and cloners also name Aimpoint's T-1 or T-2 and an FDE XPS2. Both cards are exact.

The magnifier is a tan G33. Take the no mount version for a flip riser, or the STS with EOTech's switch to side mount.

The riser is the gap. The list names a Wilcox riser it calls the .410, and cloners describe a built in flip mount. No source says whether .410 is a height. LaRue's LT101 is the other listed riser, and our card is the black one. Unity's FDE riser is your budget stand in.

Light, laser, foregrips and magazines

Light and switch: tan SureFire M600 on the rail

The enthusiast list has tan M600C, M600U and M600V Scouts, and a cloner says most CAG rifles had the light screwed straight to the SMR. Our exact tan M600U had no offer on 27 September, so the tan M640U is your equivalent.

One cloner lists a SureFire light and laser dual switch. Both cards are SureFire dual switches, so check which fits your tailcap.

Laser: LA-5 issued, ATPIAL-C for civilians

The enthusiast list has a tan L3 Insight LA-5, the AN/PEQ-15, and cloners argue over an L3Harris SAL on later rifles. The full power ATPIAL is sold to law enforcement only, so you can't buy one.

The ATPIAL-C is the civilian model, with no offers on 27 September, and the Steiner DBAL-A3 was the one in stock. Our IR laser buyer's guide compares more.

Foregrips: Tango Down, KAC, Magpul AFG or GripStop

The list names Tango Down full size or stubby grips, KAC, the Magpul AFG and Lanco's GripStop. Both FDE cards are exact, and we don't stock the KAC or GripStop.

Magazines were HK's steel 30 rounders. Vickers says his test order of 200 SA80 magazines led SOCOM to adopt HK's. Our card is HK's black steel MR556 magazine, and nobody documents the sling.

How to build a CAG HK416 clone: BRN-4, MR556 or HK upper

Every route puts a 416 pattern upper on a semi auto AR-15 lower. Pick a Brownells BRN-4, a cut down HK MR556 upper or a police trade in HK416 upper. Airsoft 416D replicas can't host a real build.

If you'd rather skip the piston, see our Mk18 Mod 0 clone build and direct impingement vs piston build data.

HK416D vs A5 vs MR556: what changes for a clone

HK added a user adjustable regulator on later variants, and the A5's needs no tools, so an A5 gas block looks wrong on a D clone.

Guns & Ammo says MR556A1 barrels aren't chrome lined, and Wikipedia says its upper fits standard AR-15 lowers. The MR556 A4 comes as an 11 inch pistol or a 16.5 inch rifle.

Brownells BRN-4 uppers: 10.4, 14.5 or 16 inch

Brownells sells the BRN-4 assembled with chrome lined barrels in 10.4, 14.5 and 16 inches. Owners report running them on LMT and Aero lowers with T2 or H2 buffers.

On 27 September only the 16 inch kit was in stock, at $1,701.99 from one merchant. The listing doesn't say what it includes, so ask before you order.

Police trade in uppers and MR556s cut to 10.4

Genuine HK416 10.4 inch police trade in uppers turn up at dealers, and the date code tells you the gas block. A gunsmith can also cut an MR556 upper to 10.4 inches if your state allows SBRs. We don't list genuine HK uppers yet.

What a CAG HK416 clone costs today

No 10.4 inch BRN-4 upper was in stock on 27 September 2026, so we can't price the issued length. At that day's lowest prices, a 16 inch BRN-4 with the tan parts, a lower and a trigger comes to $4,661.04 before a parts kit and magazines. An RC2 and a DBAL-A3 take you to $7,711.75.

HK416 builds on GPP: what they show

Here's how we counted. Leaving out our own example builds, we found 90 carts, created 10 January to 17 September 2026, holding at least one of 87 HK416 pattern products. Only 7 of those 90 carts from 10 January to 17 September pass our stricter legit cart filter, and carts from before 22 April can't be bot checked.

HK's MR556 A4 11 inch pistol sits in 37 of the 90 carts created 10 January to 17 September, and builders added it 41 times at a $3,749 median price from 31 January to 27 September 2026. The tan SMR is in none.

No cart our users named from 10 December 2025 to 27 September 2026 mentions CAG, Delta, the gold gun or the D10RS. In the 90 days to 27 September 2026, HK416 terms drew 27 site searches, and hk416 d10rs returned nothing.

BRN-4 is the 416 term Google sends us: 120 impressions and 8 clicks in the 90 days to 24 September 2026.

Build it semi auto, and pick your barrel length first. It decides which rules apply.

10.4 inches on a rifle lower: it's an SBR

A 10.4 inch barrel on a rifle lower is a short barreled rifle. ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing SBR approval and registration, but some states ban SBRs or only allow registered ones, so check yours before you assemble it. In those states, keep the upper away from unregistered rifle lowers. Our NFA paperwork rule for 2026 guide covers the change.

14.5 inches with a pinned muzzle device

A 14.5 inch barrel needs a permanently attached device, pinned and welded, to reach at least 16 inches. A removable one leaves it an SBR. One collector pinned an FH556-212A on an MR556 cut to 14.5.

The 16 inch BRN-4 needs no paperwork. For HK's 11 inch pistol, read our AR-15 pistol brace guide first.

Suppressors, select fire parts and state bans

A can is its own NFA item at any length; what changed with the suppressor tax covers the tax. Skip auto sears and select fire parts.

If you refinish or mark a lower, keep the maker's required markings and serial intact. Then check your state's SBR, suppressor and AR-15 laws.

The bin Laden raid rifle was DEVGRU's, not Delta's

Operation Neptune Spear in 2011 was a DEVGRU raid, and Wikipedia cites 2011 reports of HK416Ds. A clone vendor describes 2007 to 2011 DEVGRU 416s on HK or early Remington rails with AAC cans. The tan SMR gun dates from about 2012, and our Zero Dark Thirty HK416 build covers the raid rifle.

The 416D has no adjustable gas regulator

D models before the A5 used a fixed block, vented on later date codes, and cloners note CAG blocks aren't adjustable. Fit an adjustable block if you like, but it isn't period correct.

FDE Cerakote is a stand in for tan anodizing

The contract rifles were tan hardcoat anodized, in shades from yellowish to bronze on one rifle. Several HKPro tribute builds use Cerakote, a stand in. Anodizing matches the originals' process.

Geissele HK416 barrels and bolts are unverified

Several HKPro members say Geissele made HK416 barrels and bolts for the unit and never released them, and one calls them contract overruns. Geissele lists neither, so don't pay extra for a part sold as one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What rifle does Delta Force use?

The rifle most tied to the unit is the HK416D, which Delta helped HK develop from 2000 or 2001. Delta ordered the first several hundred 10 inch rifles, and sources date their arrival to 2004, 2005 or 2006. What Delta carries now isn't public. Forum posters name SIG and Geissele rifles, and we found no official or press source that confirms either.

What is the HK416 D10RS?

It's the HK416D with a 264 mm barrel, or 10.4 inches, the length Vickers and Marine Corps Times called 10 inch on Delta's first rifles. Wikipedia lists the same D model with 14.5, 16.5 and 20 inch barrels, and gives the barrel a 1 in 7 twist and cold hammer forging. Guns & Ammo says HK416 barrels are chrome lined. We found no HK source that explains what D or RS stands for.

What barrel length is the CAG HK416?

10.4 inches, or 264 mm, on the tan rifle most cloners copy. Cloners also report a second configuration on a 14.5 inch barrel with a Vortex 1-6x scope, so not every CAG gun was short. On a civilian rifle lower, a 10.4 inch barrel makes a short barreled rifle, and ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing SBR registration, so check your state's rules before you assemble it. A 16 inch barrel needs no NFA paperwork.

What handguard is on the CAG HK416?

Geissele's Super Modular Rail HK, P/N 05-190. Geissele catalogs it as a 10.5 inch rail with an actual length of 9 3/8 inches, and sold the tan Desert Dirt Color version as SKU 05-190S. One enthusiast parts list calls it a 10 inch SMR. A 2017 collector history says Geissele built it around 2011 for an organization replacing the HK quad rail, and nobody names the unit. We list the DDC rail.

Can a civilian own an HK416D like Delta's?

Not the issued rifle. Delta's HK416D is select fire, so its lower and Geissele SSF trigger aren't civilian parts. You can build a semi auto copy on an AR-15 lower with a Brownells BRN-4 upper, a cut down HK MR556 upper or a police trade in HK416 upper. At 10.4 inches it's a short barreled rifle, so check your state's SBR rules before assembly.

How much does a CAG HK416 clone cost?

On 27 September 2026 we couldn't price the issued 10.4 inch length, because every 10.4 inch BRN-4 upper in our feeds was out of stock. A 16 inch BRN-4 kit at $1,701.99, the tan signature parts at $2,668.87 and a lower and trigger at $290.18 came to $4,661.04, before a parts kit, magazines and a can. GPP builders added HK's MR556 A4 11 inch pistol at a $3,749 median price from 31 January to 27 September 2026.
