ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing NFA approval for suppressors, but check your state's law before you add one. The A1 stock runs on the Brownells rifle buffer kit.

Add by hand: Harrington & Richardson Retro M16A1 Lowers Receiver, Gray (out of stock today); Norgon Ambi-Catch (out of stock today); Colt AR15A4 Flat Top Upper Receiver, Modified Carbine (out of stock today); BCM® Upper Receiver - M4 Flat Top (M4 Feedramps) Complete (Unassembled) - DEMO/Scratched (out of stock today); Otter Creek Labs OCM5, 5.56mm, Black, Suppressor (out of stock today).

Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane built the Mk12 Mod 1 on M16A1 lowers from rifles sent there to be destroyed. It added an 18 inch stainless barrel, a Knight's Armament (KAC) free float rail, a Leupold scope and an OPS Inc suppressor.

You can build a close Mk12 Mod 1 clone from parts we stock, starting with the KAC rail that defines it. The select fire lower and the period scopes aren't sold new, so we show you what stands in for each.

What a Mk12 Mod 1 clone copies

A Mk12 Mod 1 clone copies the second standard configuration of Crane's Special Purpose Rifle, the one with the KAC quad rail.

Four histories agree SPR first stood for Special Purpose Receiver, an accurate upper for an existing M4 lower. Users wanted a match trigger and a full length buffer, so it grew into a complete rifle and the R became Rifle. Small Arms Defense Journal (SADJ) tells the acronym story differently.

Who carried the Mk12 Mod 1

Special operations units got it first. Then the Marine Corps wrote its own manual for it.

Where the Mod 1 fits in the Mk12 program

The Mod 1 was the second standard Mk12 configuration. USSOCOM approved the SPR requirement in 1999, in July per a program history owners repost and in October per SADJ.

Stock numbers for the Mod 0 and Mod 1 were both assigned on 27 January 2003, and community histories say later fielding standardized on the Mod 1. Our Mk12 Mod 0 clone build covers the SPR's origins.

SEALs, Rangers, Air Force and Army Special Forces

SADJ lists Rangers, SEALs and Air Force special tactics teams as users. A September 2007 Navy photo from Rawah, Iraq, shows an Army Special Forces soldier with a KAC railed MK 12.

Secondary sources cite Marcus Luttrell's book as saying he carried a Mk12 on Operation Red Wings in 2005. We found no primary photo of those rifles.

Marine designated marksmen, 2007 to 2012

Marine Corps Systems Command dated a Mk 12 Mod 1 maintenance manual, TM 11416A-IN/1, on 31 August 2007. An October 2007 Marine story says more than 30 2nd Marine Division Marines trained on the rifle.

Mk12 Mod 0 vs Mod 1, and changes in service

Both Mods share the lower, the 18 inch Douglas barrel and the OPS brake and suppressor.

Rail, sights and gas block: what the Mod 1 changed

The Mod 0 wore a PRI carbon fiber tube with an ARMS #38 SWAN sleeve, a PRI front sight gas block and an ARMS #40 rear sight. The Mod 1 swapped those for KAC's free float quad rail, KAC folding sights and a low profile gas block made at Crane.

It also moved from #22 Medium to #22 High rings and got a slightly longer suppressor collar. SADJ weighs it at 10.80 pounds to the Mod 0's 11.70.

Early and late Mod 1s: scope, trigger and stock

Early Mod 1s carried Leupold scopes marked TS-30A2, a 3-9x, and a 2.5-8x36 took over from about 2006. Many rifles later traded the KAC trigger for a Geissele, and 2009 Marine photos show A2 fixed stocks where A1s came first. Pick a version below to see which parts belong on your clone.

Which parts fit a Mod 0, an early Mod 1 or a late Mod 1

Fits means the part belongs on that version; won't fit means that version carried a different part. Early means first issue from 2003, late means after about 2006. From SADJ, GlobalSecurity, KAC, Allen Engineering, federal stock records and Marine photos.

Exact, equivalent or unobtainable: how each part is graded

Exact is the same part or its current version, equivalent a different product doing the same job and budget a cheaper stand in. Missing means we don't stock it yet, and unobtainable means nobody can sell it.

Strong evidence is a maker's catalog, a federal record or a period photo. Moderate is one or two written sources, and weak is owner accounts or one shaky caption.

The lower receiver group

The issued lowers were select fire, so this is where your clone parts ways with the original.

Lower receiver: semi auto A1 in place of the M16A1

Crane pulled lowers from surplus M16A1s sent to it for destruction, mostly Colt with some GM Hydra-Matic, per Sniper Central. SADJ also reports M16A2 lowers in photos.

Close view of a Mk12 rifle on a range: a rail stamped Knight's Armament Co. Titusville FL, a Leupold scope in A.R.M.S. throw lever rings and a lower receiver marked M16A1, with a Marine at a spotting scope behind it

Dean Davis, public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

Both are semi auto equivalents. The H&R A1 is closest, the H&R A2 matches the later lowers and the PSA is your budget pick. Owners prize H&R marks, but no document puts one on an issued rifle. Our M16A1 clone build covers the donor rifle.

Trigger: KAC two stage and its later replacements

Crane fitted KAC's two stage match trigger in its full auto form. Later rifles are disputed: owners and Sniper Central name Geissele's SSF or SSA-E, and SADJ says the last rifles appear to have used an Accuracy Speaks group.

We don't stock KAC's semi auto version, PN 25926. The Geissele SSA, which the enthusiast list names, is your equivalent, and the G2S is the budget pick.

Stock and buffer: fixed A1 or A2, rifle length

SADJ says every Mk12 left Crane with a fixed stock, and that the rifle wouldn't run reliably on full auto with a carbine buffer. The enthusiast list adds an LMT SOPMOD, a user change we cover below.

Both are exact. The H&R and bare Luth-AR A1 need the Brownells rifle buffer kit, and the CMMG listing doesn't mention a buffer or spring.

Pistol grip: A1, A2 or Falcon Ergo

SADJ names the Falcon Industries Ergo grip or a standard A1, and Sniper Central says A1 or A2.

The A1 and A2 are exact. The Ergo SureGrip is an equivalent, since nobody documents which Ergo model the rifles wore.

Trigger guard, selector and magazine catch

Only the enthusiast list names a GI trigger guard. SADJ says many lowers carry ambidextrous selectors and Norgon ambidextrous magazine catches.

Norgon Ambi-Catch
Norgon
Norgon Ambi-Catch

Out of stock

$124.99 at Brownells

The Norgon is exact but out of stock, and we don't list a GI guard yet.

The upper receiver group

The upper carries most of what makes a Mod 1 recognizable: the quad rail, the bare barrel ahead of it and the exposed gas block.

Upper receiver: Colt or Diemaco flat top, M4 ramps

SADJ, GlobalSecurity, Sniper Central and Wikipedia agree on Colt or Diemaco flat tops with M4 feed ramps, and SADJ says early ones had the ramps cut by hand. We list Colt's AR15A4 flat tops, stripped and assembled, but both were out of stock, and neither listing says whether it has M4 ramps.

The BCM and YHM are budget stand ins. The BCM has M4 ramps but it's a scratched demo unit, and the YHM listing doesn't say which ramps you get.

Barrel: Douglas 18 inch stainless, 1 in 7 twist

The Mod 1 barrel is a Douglas 18 inch 416 stainless match barrel, 1:7 with six lands and grooves, profiled for the OPS collar. SADJ also gives 18.5 inches for the first SPR barrels, but four other sources say 18.

We don't stock a Douglas. BCM's Mk12 kit is the equivalent, though it doesn't state its twist. The Ballistic Advantage, cut for the OPS brake by its name, and the .223 Wylde Rosco are budget picks. Our AR-15 barrel length guide covers what 18 inches buys you.

Gas block: Crane pattern Mk12 low profile

The Mod 1 runs rifle length gas, per SADJ, Sniper Central and Athlon, with the block exposed ahead of the rail. SADJ says Crane made the block, and Badger sells its 249-30 as identical. Owners judge Daniel Defense's Mk12 block correct too, but not KAC's or most generic blocks.

The tube is exact and the Badger and DD blocks are equivalents. The same blocks appear on our CQBR Block II clone build and M4A1 URGI clone build.

Handguard: KAC Free Float RAS, 12 inches long

SADJ and Wikipedia give its original part number as 99167, and KAC sells the current Free Float Rifle RAS as PN 21318, 12 inches and 16.3 ounces. Its federal record, assigned 28 March 2008, names the Mk12 Mod 1 as its end item. Nobody has confirmed whether 21318 keeps the 99167 design.

The KAC rail is exact, with one offer in stock. Spare panels are out of stock, and BCM's QRF-12 is a budget look alike.

Bolt carrier group: M16 profile carrier

Sniper Central says the rifles used standard M16 carriers, and owners say Colt made them. An M16 profile carrier is legal in your semi auto rifle.

The BCM is exact in profile, the Colt is out of stock and the Toolcraft is the budget pick.

Charging handle: PRI Gas Buster, military latch

SADJ says both Mods used PRI's Gas Buster, and owner and enthusiast lists add the big military latch.

The FDE military latch handle is in stock and the black one isn't yet.

Backup sights: KAC 600 meter rear, M4 folding front

The Mod 1 carries KAC's 600 meter flip up rear, PN 98474, and M4 folding front, PN 99051. KAC's catalog prints a stock number for the rear that federal records list as a forklift bracket, so we don't repeat it.

Both KAC sights are out of stock. KAC's smaller 600 meter micro rear is an in stock equivalent, and the Magpul MBUS Pro pair is your budget route.

Brake, collar and the OPS 12th Model suppressor

The OPS Inc 12th Model slides over the barrel, so it needs the right barrel profile, a collar and a brake to mount.

Muzzle device: OPS pattern brake on the Mod 1 collar

Allen Engineering says the Mod 1 collar is slightly longer than the Mod 0's but works the same. Allen lists that collar for the rifles in our Mk12 Mod H clone build and SEAL Recce rifle clone build too. Long and short brakes differ only in how they're timed.

Both Otter Creek equivalents are out of stock, and the collar listing doesn't give its length. The in stock OPS R3E2C doesn't say it's the 12th Model pattern, and we don't stock Allen's kit yet.

Suppressor: OPS Inc 12th Model, now the AEM5

RD Systems built the first 100 or so 12th Model cans, and Allen Engineering made most of the rest. Allen's AEM5 is the current equivalent.

We don't stock the AEM5. Two of the seven GPP carts built on the KAC rail from December 2025 to September 2026 pair Otter Creek's OCM5 with the OPS/AE brake. We haven't confirmed the OCM5 fits the Mod 1 collar, and it's out of stock.

Mk12 Mod 1 scope, bipod and issued kit

The enthusiast list gives six scopes as equals. The records back two Leupold generations.

Optic: Leupold Mark 4 MR/T in two generations

Early Mod 1s carried Leupold Mark 4 MR/T scopes marked TS-30A2, a 3-9x. The 2.5-8x36 MR/T with M2 turrets took over from about 2006, and a March 2008 federal record names it, with a 77 grain BDC dial, for the Mk12 Mod 1.

Both period scopes are out of production, so you'd buy one used. Our equivalent, the Mark 4HD 2.5-10x42, isn't clone correct, and the budget VX-3HD's 1 inch tube won't fit the 30 mm rings below.

Other scopes on Mod 1s, and which are documented

The Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x24 has the best claim. Athlon counts it among issued Mk12 optics, and Crane's 2005 Nightforce contract covered a 2.5-10x24 without naming a rifle. Nightforce dropped it in 2008 and brought it back in limited numbers in 2015. Wikipedia puts Leupold's 3.5-10x40 on the earlier SPR/A, and Athlon says units later swapped in Mark 4 3.5-10s from their other sniper rifles. The 2005 contract also covered a 3.5-15x50, again without naming a rifle. Owners report a Premier 3-15x, and we found no source for the enthusiast list's Leupold Mk6 3-18x44.

The NXS 2.5-10x42 is a stand in with a bigger objective.

Scope mount: A.R.M.S. #22 High rings on the rail

SADJ says the Mod 1 uses A.R.M.S. #22 High rings clamped to the rail, and a 2008 Marine photo shows A.R.M.S. throw lever rings there. Owners and the enthusiast list specify the early pattern without a lever stop.

The A.R.M.S. ring is exact but out of stock. The Nightforce rings suit an NXS build, and the Warne set is your budget pick.

Bipod: Harris S-BRM on a KAC or ARMS adapter

Harris bipods show in Marine and Navy photos, and clone lists specify the 6 to 9 inch S-BRM on a KAC rail adapter. Wikipedia says the ARMS #32 mount served on both Mods, but the SADJ passage it cites shows a Mod 0.

The Harris S-BRM and the ARMS #32 are in stock. We don't stock KAC's 98060 adapter or the KMW Pod-Loc yet.

Laser: AN/PEQ-2A, and the PEQ-15 question

Only one caption, on American Special Ops, ties a PEQ-2A to a SEAL's Mod 1, and the page's own alt text contradicts it. The enthusiast list adds the PEQ-15 and PEQ-16. An August 2008 Marine photo in its gallery shows a PEQ-15 type laser on a Mk12 pattern rifle.

A Marine designated marksman in desert camouflage kneels at a dirt berm aiming a black rifle with a fixed stock, quad rail, laser module, scope and bipod grip, other Marines prone beside him

A designated marksman with Task Force 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines during an assault in Afghanistan on 28 August 2008. His Mk12 pattern rifle carries a PEQ-15 type laser and a bipod grip, and the Marine Corps caption doesn't name the rifle. U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. James M. Mercure, public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

The ATPIAL-C, the commercial PEQ-15 pattern, is out of stock, the DBAL-A3 is an in stock equivalent, and the Holosun is the budget pick.

Ammunition: Mk 262, the 77 grain load it was built for

The rifle's accuracy requirement was written around Mk 262, Black Hills' 77 grain open tip match load. Mk 262 Mod 0 used a Sierra MatchKing without a cannelure, and Mod 1 added one.

Military lots aren't sold, so Black Hills' commercial 77 grain OTM is your equivalent, and the Vairog and SIG loads are budget picks.

Magazines, sling and the Pelican 1700 case

American Special Ops lists standard 20 or 30 round magazines. Sniper Central says rifles shipped from Crane in a Pelican 1700 case, and an owner adds an Eagle UMSS sling.

The aluminum magazine matches the standard pattern, and PMAGs and the Magpul sling are modern budget stand ins. We don't stock the UMSS or a Pelican 1700 yet.

The 18 inch barrel keeps a Mod 1 clone a plain rifle, so you only need care with the trigger group and the can.

Semi auto lower and trigger, no auto sear

The issued lower was select fire, and you can't own that unless you buy a machine gun registered before May 19, 1986. Build on a semi auto A1 profile lower with a semi auto trigger, and never install an auto sear or a full auto hammer, trigger, disconnector or selector. An M16 profile carrier is fine.

The suppressor is still an NFA item

The AEM5 is a suppressor under the National Firearms Act (NFA), but ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing NFA approval, registration and the tax stamp for suppressors. That's an enforcement policy that could be reversed, and ATF still takes a $0 Form 4 if you want yours registered. Some states ban suppressors outright, and some only allow registered ones. Our guide to suppressors in 2026 covers the tax and the paperwork.

18 inch barrel: no SBR paperwork, check state law

Federal law draws the line at 16 inches, so your 18 inch barrel needs no short barreled rifle (SBR) registration and the brake needn't be pinned. Under 16, it's an SBR unless a permanently attached muzzle device brings the barrel to 16. ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing SBR registration, but your state's law still applies. Check your state's rules on threaded barrels, muzzle devices and suppressors.

Complete Mk12 uppers: BCM Mod 1R and the DD URG

BCM's Mk 12 Mod 1R complete upper carries the KAC rail and listed at $1,557.40 on 27 September 2026. We haven't checked its twist, gas block or sights against the issued parts.

Daniel Defense's MK12 SPR upper uses DD's own rail, so it isn't Mod 1 pattern, and Spike's Tactical's SPR upper is a budget look alike. Centurion Arms and Charlie's Custom Clones sell complete rifles, Charlie's at $4,150 to $8,596 on 27 September 2026, depending on options.

Parts no retailer can sell you

The select fire lower and trigger groups, the AN/PEQ-2A and military Mk 262 lots are military items. The original OPS can and both period Leupolds are out of production, so you'd buy used.

Other parts are sold, just not through our feeds yet: the AEM5, Allen's brake and collar, KAC's 98060 adapter and a Pelican 1700. We couldn't confirm that the Eagle UMSS or a Douglas Mk12 barrel is still sold.

Mk12 Mod 1 builds on GPP: what they show

Nobody on GPP has named a build after this rifle. None of the named carts saved from 10 December 2025 to 27 September 2026 mentions the Mk12, the Mod 1 or Lone Survivor.

So we followed the rail. Thirteen carts created from 17 December 2025 to 21 September 2026 hold KAC's Mk12 Mod 1 rail, and 7 pass our filter for real builds.

Mod 1 parts in the 7 carts built on its rail

Share of the 7 GunPartPicker carts that hold KAC's Free Float RAS for the Mk12 Mod 1 and pass our filter for real builds. Carts created 17 December 2025 to 21 September 2026, read 27 September 2026. With 7 carts, one cart moves a bar 14 points.

Mod 1 parts in the 7 carts built on its rail
ItemShare (%)
Geissele SSA-E trigger, 4 of 757%
OPS/AE pattern brake, 3 of 743%

Otter Creek OCM5 can, 2 of 729%
A1 profile lower, 1 of 714%
Fixed A1 stock, 0 of 70%
Period Leupold or Nightforce scope, 0 of 70%

Most pair the rail with modern parts, and seven carts is a small sample.

The one GPP cart that reads as a Mod 1 clone

One anonymous cart from 21 September 2026 gets close: the KAC rail, Daniel Defense's 18 inch 1:7 Mk12 barrel, an OPS/AE brake and a Geissele SSA-E. Then it takes a KAC gas block, an LMT SOPMOD stock and a Colt M4 lower. Swap those three and you're most of the way there.

Building a modern 18 inch SPR instead

If you want the Mod 1's shape without the period hunt, keep the KAC rail, an 18 inch rifle length SPR barrel and an OPS pattern brake. Then pick the trigger, stock and scope for how you shoot. It won't be clone correct, and it'll look like most of the carts above.

What the internet gets wrong about the Mk12 Mod 1

Here's what people call it, and what the records say.

Commonly calledWhat the records say
SPR, Special Purpose Rifle from day oneSpecial Purpose Receiver first, an upper for an M4 lower
The Navy SEAL versionSEALs, Rangers, Air Force special tactics and the Marine Corps all used it
Badger's gas blockCrane made the issued block; Badger sells 249-30 as identical
Leupold TS-30A2 2.5-8x36TS-30A2 scopes were 3-9x36; the 2.5-8x36 MR/T M2 came about 2006
The long brakeThe longer part is the Mod 1 collar; long and short brakes differ only in timing
Mk12 with a SOPMOD stockIssued with fixed A1, later A2, stocks
Retired in 20172017 was the planned end, and Sniper Central reported SEAL use in 2020

Wikipedia's Mk 12 Mod 1 gallery photo from RawahThe Navy caption says only MK 12; the Mod is an editor's inference

The Mod 1 rail is the KAC RAS, not a PRI tube

Charlie's Custom Clones' Mk12 page, read on 27 September 2026, gives the Mod 0 a KAC rail and the Mod 1 a PRI round rail, the reverse of SADJ, Wikipedia and Primary Arms. The same page sells KAC's rail as the Mod 1 part.

The KAC rail does not need a shorter gas system

KAC and its retailers say the Free Float Rifle RAS needs carbine or mid length gas. That only applies if you want the block under the rail. The Mod 1 runs rifle length gas with the block out front.

TS-30A2 means a 3-9x scope, not a 2.5-8x36

Wikipedia and an owner relay say the plain TS-30 was a 2.5-8x36, and that may be where the mix up began. Wikipedia also puts a Nightforce 2.5-10x42 on Navy SPRs, citing a 2005 contract that lists a 2.5-10x24 instead.

SOPMOD stocks were user changes, not issue

Carbine stocks show up in photos and in Lone Survivor, but SADJ shows a SOPMOD on a Mod 1 as a user change. The claim that Crane banned carbine stocks rests on one forum post.

Lone Survivor used film props, not Red Wings rifles

IMFDB identifies the film's rifles as Mk 12 Mod 1s, and Propstore sold one hero stunt rifle as a rubber prop cast from a real Mk 12. We found no primary photo of the rifles carried on the operation in 2005. The film belongs to our Lone Survivor Mk12 build.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mk12 Mod 1 full auto?

The issued rifle was select fire. Crane built it on surplus M16A1 lowers with Knight's Armament's full auto two stage match trigger. A civilian clone has to be semi auto, so build it on a semi auto A1 profile lower with KAC's semi auto two stage or a Geissele SSA or SSA-E. The only legal route to a select fire Mk12 is a machine gun registered before May 19, 1986.

What is the difference between the Mk12 Mod 0 and Mod 1?

The Mod 1 replaced the Mod 0's PRI carbon fiber tube and ARMS #38 SWAN sleeve with a Knight's Armament free float RAS. It also swapped the PRI front sight gas block and ARMS #40 rear for KAC folding sights and a Crane made low profile gas block, and moved to A.R.M.S. #22 High rings and a slightly longer suppressor collar. Both share the M16A1 lower, the 18 inch Douglas barrel and the OPS brake and suppressor.

How long is the Mk12 Mod 1 rail?

Twelve inches. Knight's Armament sells the current version as the Free Float Rifle RAS, PN 21318, at 12 inches and 16.3 ounces, and the federal stock record for that part names the Mk12 Mod 1 as its end item. Small Arms Defense Journal and Wikipedia give the original part number as 99167. Nobody has confirmed whether 21318 is the same design under a new number.

What barrel length and twist does the Mk12 Mod 1 use?

An 18 inch Douglas 416 stainless match barrel with a 1:7 twist, six lands and grooves and a rifle length gas system, profiled for the OPS Inc suppressor collar. Small Arms Defense Journal also gives 18.5 inches for the first SPR barrels but calls it 18 inches elsewhere. Wikipedia, GlobalSecurity, Sniper Central and Allen Engineering all say 18 inches.

What scope was on the Mk12 Mod 1?

A Leupold Mark 4 MR/T, in two generations. Early rifles carried scopes marked TS-30A2, a 3-9x36 per Wikipedia. From about 2006 the 2.5-8x36 MR/T with M2 turrets took over, and a federal stock record assigned in March 2008 names that scope, with an illuminated reticle and a 77 grain BDC dial, for the Mk12 Mod 1. Athlon also counts the Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x24 among issued Mk12 optics.

Is the Mk12 still in service?

Mostly not. A program history reposted by owners says SOCOM divested it in 2012 as SCAR based rifles took over, and an archived Wikipedia passage says divestment began in mid 2011 with complete replacement planned by 2017. Later sources give 2017 as the retirement year, but we found no retirement document, and Sniper Central wrote in 2020 that a few SEAL teams still had the rifle.

Can you buy a complete Mk12 Mod 1 upper?

Yes. BCM sells a Mk 12 Mod 1R complete upper with the Knight's Armament rail, listed at $1,557.40 in our catalog on 27 September 2026, though we haven't checked its barrel twist, gas block or sights against the issued parts. Daniel Defense's MK12 SPR upper uses DD's own rail, so it isn't a Mod 1 pattern. Centurion Arms and Charlie's Custom Clones sell complete rifles.
