Black Hawk Down build: the Ranger and Delta carbines on screen

The film's Colt 727 style props, what Rangers and Delta really carried in October 1993, and the parts for the look

By GPP Editorial Team7 min read

On 3 October 1993, Task Force Ranger went into Mogadishu for what should have been a short daylight raid. Two Black Hawks went down, and the fight ran through the night.

Ridley Scott's 2001 film Black Hawk Down puts that battle on screen. The carbines you see are Colt 727 style conversions, and they've shaped what people picture as a 1993 CAR-15 ever since.

If you want the rifle one real operator carried that day, our Gary Gordon CAR-15 clone build covers Gordon's Colt 723 part by part. This guide stays on the film and the Ranger look.

What the film's carbines are

The props imitate the Colt 727: a 14.5 inch carbine with an A2 upper, the adjustable A2 rear sight in the carry handle, round plastic handguards and a collapsible stock. Most wear an Aimpoint CompM on a carry handle mount.

RECOIL reports the armory used CompMs because the Aimpoint 3000 and 5000 of 1993 were out of production by 2001. The lights on screen are newer SureFire 660s. The Gordon prop was a Guatemalan export Colt M16A2 cut to about 10 inches, with a dummy suppressor and a CompM on a B-Square mount.

What Rangers and Delta carried on 3 October 1993

The battle wasn't fought with one rifle. Most Rangers carried full length M16A2 rifles, with some Colt 727 carbines. Delta carried Colt 723s, and the later ones pair a deflector upper with the simpler A1 style rear sight.

Rangers called their M16s unwieldy afterward. Delta's carbine users didn't, and SOCOM put the M4A1 on contract in February 1994. Our M4A1 Block I clone build picks up the story there.

Some Delta rifles carried suppressors. OPS Inc hand built a direct thread can for the 723's 14.5 inch barrel, and the film's Gordon prop wears a dummy version of it.

The barrel: 14.5 inches with carbine gas

A 727 or 723 barrel is 14.5 inches with a 1:7 twist and a carbine length gas system. The front sight base doubles as the gas block. A mid length barrel won't look or run like the period rifle, so skip it for this build.

The FN barrels are government profile with carbine gas. The LMT comes with the A2 front sight base already on it. The 16 inch FN is the simple legal route if you don't want to pin a muzzle device.

Our barrel length data shows 14.5 inches still sitting second only to 16 inches among builders today.

Upper, sights and the Aimpoint

For the film look you want an A2 carry handle upper with the adjustable rear sight. The H&R Government carbine upper is the closest complete option we list. Check its barrel length on the listing before you buy. A plain A2 stripped upper lets you build your own.

The optic sits high because it mounts on the carry handle. A Weaver carry handle mount with 30mm rings gets you there, and the A.R.M.S. #02 mount clone builders like is still a catalog item. A current Aimpoint PRO fits the same 30mm rings and looks the part.

The light: a 6P on a mount, not hose clamps

You'll read that 1993 lights were torches hose clamped to the handguard. That rifle belongs to Larry Vickers in Panama in 1989, and he says 6P lights replaced it soon after.

Photos from 1993 show Laser Products 6P lights, the company that became SureFire. Ranger 727s held them in SureFire barrel mounts under the front sight. Delta rifles carried them in rings on short Weaver rail sections screwed through the handguard.

So there were rails in 1993. They were short, and they sat on plastic handguards and carry handle mounts. A current SureFire 6PX in a one inch ring on a short rail section gets you the Delta version.

Handguards and lower

Round carbine handguards with a single heat shield finish the silhouette. They're cheap and still made, but profiles vary, so check the photos rather than the description.

The H&R lower is an A2 forging with a CAR stock and semi auto parts, so it covers the lower in one purchase.

Period or practical

Decide which rifle you're building before you buy anything, because the handguard makes the two incompatible.

The period version keeps plastic handguards, the carry handle, a tall optic and a light on a short rail. It looks right and it's noticeably worse to shoot than a modern carbine.

The practical version keeps the 14.5 inch barrel and the silhouette, then adds a free float M-LOK rail, a low red dot and a properly mounted light. We'd guess most people want this one. Our M-LOK data covers the attachment standards.

A 14.5 inch barrel needs a muzzle device pinned and welded to bring it to 16 inches. Without that, you've built a short barreled rifle. ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing SBR approval and registration, but some states ban SBRs or only allow registered ones. An extended A2 flash hider is the usual choice.

The suppressed Delta look needs a bare muzzle, so the rifle becomes an SBR and the can is an NFA item too. ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing approval and registration for both. State laws on both vary, and some states rule that version out entirely.

If the era interests you, our Heat build covers the shorter Colt carbine from a 1995 film.

One email when we change the picks. Nothing else.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What rifles are used in Black Hawk Down?

Mostly Colt 727 style carbine conversions: 14.5 inch barrels, A2 carry handle uppers with the adjustable rear sight, and Aimpoint CompM red dots. The Gordon prop was a Colt M16A2 cut to about 10 inches with a dummy suppressor.

What did Rangers and Delta carry in Mogadishu in 1993?

Most Rangers carried full length M16A2 rifles, with some Colt 727 carbines. Delta carried Colt 723 carbines with the A1 style rear sight, often with Aimpoint 5000 or 3000 red dots, and some with OPS Inc suppressors.

Why does the film use Aimpoint CompMs?

RECOIL reports the Aimpoint 3000 and 5000 used in 1993 were out of production by 2001, so the armory fitted the CompM. A current 30mm Aimpoint in carry handle rings is the usual stand in today.

How were weapon lights mounted in 1993?

Photos show Laser Products 6P lights in SureFire barrel mounts under the front sight on Ranger 727s, and in rings on short Weaver rail sections screwed through the handguard on Delta rifles. The hose clamped light is Larry Vickers' 1989 rifle.

What barrel do I need for a Black Hawk Down build?

A 14.5 inch, 1:7 twist carbine barrel with carbine length gas and a front sight base. Mid length gas isn't period. Pin and weld a muzzle device to reach 16 inches, or use a 16 inch carbine barrel.

Do I need to pin and weld a 14.5 inch barrel?

Yes, if you want to keep it out of short barreled rifle rules. The muzzle device has to be permanently attached so the barrel measures at least 16 inches. The suppressed Delta look needs a bare muzzle, which makes it an SBR. ATF announced on October 9, 2026 that it would stop enforcing SBR and suppressor approval and registration, but check your state first, since some ban both or only allow registered ones.
