What the AR-15 needs to run a forced reset trigger
The AR-15 is the platform every fast trigger maker builds for first. Fitment problems here are almost always the carrier or the buffer, not the trigger.
- Full auto profile bolt carrier (M16 cut) for a forced reset trigger; most binary triggers run on a semi carrier
- Mil-spec lower with standard 0.154" pin holes
- H2 or H3 buffer and a fresh spring so the carrier does not outrun the reset

How forced reset trigger fitment works
A forced reset trigger does one thing a normal trigger does not: it uses the bolt carrier's forward travel to push the trigger back to reset. That is why it needs a carrier with the full auto profile on the underside. A semi auto carrier has that surface milled away, so there is nothing to push with, and the gun fires once and goes dead.
Timing is the second half. The trigger has to finish resetting before the carrier comes back and the hammer follows. A gun that is overgassed, or running a light buffer, cycles faster than the reset can keep up with, and you get hammer follow, light strikes, or a trigger that feels locked. The fix is almost never the trigger. It is a heavier buffer, a fresh spring, or less gas.
Binary triggers are simpler. They fire on the pull and again on the release, no carrier interaction, so they run on any carrier. They still shoot fast enough that the same buffer advice applies.
FRT legal states and binary trigger legal states
Federally, forced reset triggers are legal to own after the 2025 settlement. Fifteen states and DC restrict them, and thirteen states ban binary triggers. The state guides track each statute: FRT legality by state, binary triggers by state, and the full gun laws by state table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are forced reset triggers legal?
Federally, yes, since the 2025 Department of Justice settlement ended the ATF's position that they are machine guns. State law is separate: fifteen states and DC restrict them. The state guides linked below track each one.
What is the difference between a forced reset trigger, a binary trigger and a Super Safety?
A forced reset trigger uses the bolt carrier to push the trigger forward after each shot, so the trigger is reset for you. A binary trigger fires once on the pull and once on the release. A Super Safety is a drop in selector that forces the reset on a standard trigger. Each has its own legal picture, covered in the comparison guide.
What does an AR-15 need to run a forced reset trigger?
A full auto profile bolt carrier (the M16 cut on the underside), a mil-spec lower with standard pin holes, a mil-spec or heavier hammer spring, and a heavier buffer, usually H2 or H3, so the carrier does not outrun the reset. The host requirements guide walks through all of it.
Why does my forced reset trigger fire one or two rounds and go dead?
Nine times out of ten it is a semi auto carrier. Without the full auto profile there is nothing to push the trigger forward. If the carrier is right, the gun is undergassed or the buffer is too light for the trigger to keep up.
Is there a forced reset trigger for a Glock?
Yes, from small makers, and most are built for Gen 3 frames. Franklin Armory's binary kits cover Gen 3 G17, G19 and G22. Stock changes often; the picker shows what is in stock today.
Do binary triggers need a full auto carrier?
No. Binary triggers work on standard semi auto carriers. They still benefit from a heavier buffer on a fast shooting gun.
