Where the Dragon camo comes from

Treyarch let Xbox 360 players vote on new Black Ops 2 camos in May 2013. Dragon and Cyborg won. The Dragon Personalization Pack went on sale on 29 May 2013 for 160 Microsoft Points, about $1.99.

The pack came with the camo, three reticles and a calling card, and it covered every weapon. PlayStation 3 got it in June 2013 and PC in 2014.

Treyarch described it as inspired by the armored body of a mythical dragon. It moves: lava glows through the cracks between the scales.

Paid camos like Dragon set up the camo packs and bundles every Call of Duty sells now.

Painting Dragon camo on a real gun

Start black. Spray Krylon Gloss Banner Red through a reptile or scale stencil, shift the stencil, then do the same with Metallic Gold so the two colors overlap like scales catching light.

You can't paint the animation, but a little gold in the gaps fakes the lava glow.

We'd buy a scale stencil instead of cutting one. Cutting hundreds of scales by hand takes longer than the paint job.

How to spray Dragon on a gun

  1. 1. Strip it down

On an AR pull the bolt carrier group and split the upper and lower. On an AK take off the dust cover and bolt carrier. On a Glock take the slide off. Remove the optic or plan to tape it.

  2. 2. Degrease everything

Wipe every outside surface with acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Paint will not hold over gun oil.

  3. 3. Mask what moves

Plug the chamber and muzzle, tape the ejection port, magazine well, trigger and safety, and cover the optic lenses.

  4. 4. Base coat in black

Two light coats over the whole gun, 8 to 12 inches away, 10 minutes apart.

  5. 5. Banner red through a reptile stencil

Lay a reptile stencil sheet on the gun and spray banner red through it.

  6. 6. Metallic gold through a reptile stencil

Lay a reptile stencil sheet on the gun and spray metallic gold through it.

  7. 7. Let it cure

Handle it after an hour but give it a full day before it goes in a case, and a few days before hard use.
