Where the Golden camo comes from
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare shipped in November 2007 with a camo called Gold. Its in game description was one word: Bling.
Only six guns could get it. The Desert Eagle went gold at rank 55, the top rank. The AK-47, Mini-Uzi, M60E4, Dragunov and M1014 each turned gold when you finished every challenge for their whole weapon class.
Gold became the mastery camo for almost every Call of Duty after that. Black Ops 2's Diamond, Black Ops 3's Dark Matter and Modern Warfare's Damascus all start with getting guns gold.
In real life, gold plated guns go back centuries as presentation pieces. On a rattle can build it's pure flex, and it photographs better than almost anything.

Painting a gold gun
Metallic gold needs a smooth, dark base to look like metal. Spray gloss black first, let it cure, then Krylon Metallic Gold in thin coats from about a foot away.
Hit a few edges with Gloss Sun Yellow for highlights. Skip a matte clear coat, which kills the shine. Use a gloss clear or none.
We'd keep the gold to the receiver and leave small parts black. You'll get the game look without paint gumming up pins and springs.
How to spray Golden on a gun
1. Strip it down
On an AR pull the bolt carrier group and split the upper and lower. On an AK take off the dust cover and bolt carrier. On a Glock take the slide off. Remove the optic or plan to tape it.
2. Degrease everything
Wipe every outside surface with acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Paint will not hold over gun oil.
3. Mask what moves
Plug the chamber and muzzle, tape the ejection port, magazine well, trigger and safety, and cover the optic lenses.
4. Base coat in metallic gold
Two light coats over the whole gun, 8 to 12 inches away, 10 minutes apart.
5. Soft sun yellow haze
Mist soft patches of sun yellow from 12 to 18 inches, so the edges fade.
6. Let it cure
Handle it after an hour but give it a full day before it goes in a case, and a few days before hard use.

Frequently Asked Questions
How did you get the gold AK-47 in Call of Duty 4?
Finish every challenge for every assault rifle. The gold Desert Eagle came at rank 55, and the Mini-Uzi, M60E4, Dragunov and M1014 went gold the same way through their own classes.
Was Golden in Modern Warfare 2?
No. Modern Warfare 2 (2009) has no gold camo in multiplayer. The Golden camo is a Call of Duty 4 reward.
What spray paint do you need for a Golden paint job?
2 cans of Krylon, sprayed in this order: Metallic Gold, Gloss Sun Yellow. Rust-Oleum has a match for every color.
Can you paint the Golden camo on a real gun?
Yes. Strip and degrease the gun, mask the bore, chamber and anything that moves, lay the lightest color first and build the look light to dark with tape and stencils. Plan on an afternoon plus a day to cure.
