Where the Diamond camo comes from

Black Ops 2 launched in November 2012 with Diamond hidden. To see it you had to get every weapon in a class to Gold, and Gold meant finishing all of a gun's camo challenges.

Once a class was done, Diamond unlocked on all of it. The in game look is gold studded with cut diamond facets.

Diamond came back in Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3, Infinite Warfare, WWII, Black Ops 4, Cold War and Vanguard. In Black Ops 3 it became the step before Dark Matter.

Our spray can version paints the ice: white with light blue and blue shards and bright flecks. The gold in the game version is easy to add with one more can.

Painting Diamond camo on a real gun

White primer, then Krylon Flat White. Spray Gloss Blue Ocean Breeze and True Blue through a splinter stencil, turning it between colors so the shards cross.

Flick a few white specks on last for sparkle. Add Metallic Gold on the edges if you want it closer to the game.

We'd go light on the shards. You want the white to lead, or it turns into a blue gun.

How to spray Diamond on a gun

  1. 1. Strip it down

On an AR pull the bolt carrier group and split the upper and lower. On an AK take off the dust cover and bolt carrier. On a Glock take the slide off. Remove the optic or plan to tape it.

  2. 2. Degrease everything

Wipe every outside surface with acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Paint will not hold over gun oil.

  3. 3. Mask what moves

Plug the chamber and muzzle, tape the ejection port, magazine well, trigger and safety, and cover the optic lenses.

  4. 4. Base coat in white

Two light coats over the whole gun, 8 to 12 inches away, 10 minutes apart.

  5. 5. Blue ocean breeze through a splinter stencil

Lay a splinter stencil sheet on the gun and spray blue ocean breeze through it.

  6. 6. True blue through a splinter stencil

Lay a splinter stencil sheet on the gun and spray true blue through it.

  7. 7. White specks

Flick small specks of white: a short burst from a foot away, or a stiff brush dipped in paint.

  8. 8. Let it cure

Handle it after an hour but give it a full day before it goes in a case, and a few days before hard use.
