Why Barnaul Ammo

Barnaul is a Russian ammo plant that's been in the city of Barnaul since 1941. It makes cheap steel case pistol, rifle and shotgun ammo with Berdan primers and non-corrosive powder.

Brown Bear, Silver Bear and Golden Bear differ by case coating: lacquer, zinc or brass. The Centaur line uses American bullets, and Barnaul also loads Academy's Monarch ammo. Calibers include 5.56, 7.62x39, .308 and 9mm, plus a 151 grain 9mm subsonic.

Berdan primed steel cases can't be reloaded. We'd keep it for plinking in an AK or a beater AR, not a match rifle.

  • Brown Bear uses a lacquered steel case, and the Centaur line uses a polymer coated steel case.
  • Barnaul also loads the steel case ammo sold under Academy's Monarch brand.
