About Weatherby
Weatherby is known for hot magnum cartridges like the .257, .300 and .340 Weatherby Magnum and the Mark V bolt action. It now makes rifles in Sheridan, Wyoming.
Founded 1945, Sheridan, Wyoming · Magnum cartridges · Mark V · Bolt action
Why Weatherby
Weatherby started in 1945 as Roy Weatherby's small sporting goods store in California and built its name on fast magnum cartridges like the .257, .300 and .340 Weatherby Magnum. Rifles have been finished in Sheridan, Wyoming since 2019.
The Mark V came out in 1958 to handle those magnums, with up to nine locking lugs; its barreled actions are made in Minnesota. The Vanguard followed in 1970 on the Howa 1500 action from Japan, and the Model 307 landed in 2023 between the two on price.
Newer cartridges are aimed at lighter rifles: the 6.5 Weatherby RPM in 2019 and the 338 Weatherby RPM in 2022.
We'd buy a Vanguard in a common caliber for a first hunting rifle, and a Mark V only if you want the magnum it was built around.
- The Mark V action has up to nine locking lugs.
- Newer cartridges like the 6.5 RPM and 338 RPM are made for light rifles.
