Gunstruction in 2026: Does It Still Work?

No, not in any way you can use. When we opened ar15.com/gunstruction in a desktop browser on October 7, 2026, the menu loaded and listed the AR-15, AR-308, Remington 700 and AK. Then it stopped. A message box wouldn't close, picking a rifle did nothing, and the browser console showed a script error.

The phone apps are gone too. The Google Play listing returns an error page, and the App Store listing comes up blank.

We went through the record to sort out what broke and when, and what to use instead.

What is Gunstruction?

Gunstruction is a 3D rifle builder hosted on AR15.COM. You pick a lower, bolt on an upper, add a stock and an optic, then spin the rifle around and paint it.

For years it was the only tool that let you see a build before you bought it.

A team of video game developers built it. The open beta went up in September 2013. By October it had over 700 parts from 38 manufacturers, according to the launch post on AmmoLand.

It showed price, weight and length as you built. It stopped you from picking parts that didn't fit, and it checked whether your optic co-witnessed with your iron sights.

The team moved fast early on. Between the September beta and the October launch post they added modular handguards, a low res mode for older computers, and a way to duplicate or remove parts. The brand list doubled, from about 20 to about 40.

Phone apps for iOS and Android followed in 2014.

Does Gunstruction still work in 2026?

No. The page loads, but the builder doesn't.

AR15.COM rebuilt it on WebGL, which draws 3D graphics in the browser with no plugin. The files on AR15.COM's server are dated October 2024. That version gets as far as the age check and the platform menu. Past that, it hangs. In our test the message of the day box wouldn't close, picking a rifle did nothing, and the console showed an "Uncaught SyntaxError."

The message box tells you to hit "Clear Cache" first. That didn't get us any further.

We couldn't find any word from AR15.COM on whether it'll be fixed. Nobody seems to be maintaining it.

Why did Gunstruction stop working for years?

The first web version ran on a browser plugin, and browsers dropped plugins.

Gunstruction originally needed the Unity Web Player. That was an NPAPI plugin, the same old plugin system Java applets used. Browsers wanted NPAPI gone. A plugin ran with the browser's own access, and one crash could take the whole browser down.

Chrome switched NPAPI off in September 2015. Firefox followed in March 2017, keeping only Flash. Unity dropped the Web Player around the same time.

So the builder showed a gray box for a lot of people. By November 2022, users on the GUNSTRUCTION forum reported a gray screen on Android and on PC, in Chrome and in Firefox.

Someone did rebuild it in WebGL, with files dated October 2024. That's the version on the site now, and it doesn't get past the menu. We couldn't find an announcement for it.

Can you still download the Gunstruction app?

Not from Apple or Google.

In April 2022 a user on the GUNSTRUCTION forum restored a new iPad and found the app was "no longer available." When we checked in October 2026, the Google Play listing returned an error and the App Store page was blank.

You'll find old Gunstruction APK files on third party download sites. We'd skip them. They're unofficial copies of an app nobody's updating, and nobody's checking what's inside them.

The browser version on AR15.COM is the official one, and it's broken too.

Gunstruction stuck on the menu or a gray screen?

That's not your computer. It's the builder. Clearing the cache, turning on hardware acceleration and switching browsers won't get you a working rifle. If you want to see a build, use one of the tools below.

What Gunstruction can't tell you

Even when it worked, Gunstruction showed you what a rifle looked like. It never told you what the rifle costs today, or whether anyone has the parts in stock.

Every part in it has to be modeled by hand. Breach Bang Clear described the process in 2014: the team built each one from "photographs, CAD drawings, and the actual physical part."

That's an artist's time for every handguard length and every color. Makers release new handguards, stocks and colors every month, and a hand built catalog can't keep pace.

Gunstruction vs GunPartPicker

We built GunPartPicker as a Gunstruction alternative for the half it never did: today's prices and stock.

Our AR-15 builder gives you one part per slot, a running total, and a compatibility check. It warns you when a caliber, gas length or thread pitch doesn't match, and it lets you keep going if you know better.

Our parts come from retailer feeds. A new part shows up when a store lists it, with today's price and stock at each store. You won't get a 3D rifle. You'll get a build you can actually buy.

Painting it

Painting was one of Gunstruction's best features. Our gun paint planner does it for about 30 guns, from the AR-15 and AK-47 to the Glock 19. Spray, brush or stencil it with real Krylon, Rust-Oleum and Cerakote colors, then get the list of cans to buy.

Where this comes from

The current status is our own check on October 7, 2026. We tried the builder in a desktop browser and looked up both app store listings.

We couldn't find an announcement for the apps leaving the stores, the WebGL rebuild, or the builder breaking. If AR15.COM fixes it, we'll update this page.
