POF-USA ranks #80 of 419 brands on GunPartPicker so far in October 2026, just behind Diamondback, with about 1 in every 500 parts builders added. Up from #82 in September. Builders are reaching for POF-USA mostly for upper receiver parts. Why POF-USA

POF-USA was started in a Phoenix garage in 2002 by Frank DeSomma, an aerospace process engineer. Its 2004 P416 was the first short stroke gas piston AR-15 sold commercially.

The piston is the whole reason to buy one. A regulated short stroke system pushes an op rod into the carrier instead of dumping gas into the upper, so the action runs cleaner and cooler, and the gas plug lets you tune it for short barrels or a can.

POF builds a lot around that: NP3 coated parts, nitrided barrels and gas blocks, a roller cam pin and an oversized heat sink barrel nut. The Revolution, a compact .308, weighs 7 lbs 4 oz.

POF uppers hold about 2% of the upper slot on GunPartPicker. The median paid runs about $820 against roughly $400 for the typical upper.

You pay twice the price, and a piston upper uses its own carrier and op rod, so you can't swap in any direct impingement bolt carrier. We'd buy one for a short barrel or suppressed gun, and skip it for a basic 16 inch carbine.
