What the Idaho statute says

Can an Idaho city ban AR-15s?

Idaho Code § 18-3302J

“no county, city, agency, board or any other political subdivision of this state may adopt or enforce any law, rule, regulation, ordinance, executive order, or policy which regulates in any manner the sale, acquisition, transfer, ownership, possession”

No, and since April 2, 2026 (S1430) a knowing violation costs the local government $10,000 each time, with suits open to the attorney general and affected residents. Cities and counties may only regulate discharge. Idaho has no assault weapon law.

Idaho law in detail

  • Idaho has no assault weapon ban, so a standard AR-15 configuration is legal to buy and build as it ships: pistol grip, adjustable stock, flash hider, detachable magazine.
  • Feature restrictions are a state question, not a federal one. Nothing in Idaho law turns a common feature into a prohibited one.

The federal rule

There is no federal assault weapon ban; the 1994 federal ban expired in 2004. States that restrict them either name specific models or define an assault weapon by features such as a pistol grip, an adjustable stock, a flash hider or a threaded barrel, which is why featureless and fixed magazine builds exist.
