Best Overall and Best Budget: Magpul MBUS Gen 2 Front

The Gen 2 is the MBUS most AR owners already know. A spring loaded release on either side flips it up, and a steel crossbolt locks it to the rail. It gives you the same height over bore as a standard A2 front sight.

Pick it if you want a proven backup front for the least money. It took 20.6% of front sight picks, well ahead of the Midwest Industries fixed front in second.

A fixed front sight doesn't fold. It stays up all the time, so there's no detent or spring to fail when you need it. Midwest Industries' version takes a standard A2 front sight post, so you can swap in any A2 post you like.

Best Low Profile Folding: Magpul MBUS 3 Front

The MBUS 3 is Magpul's newest polymer backup sight. It's spring loaded, so you press an ambidextrous button and the post snaps up to standard AR height. Fold it down and it sits only 0.44 inches above the rail.

It's the front to buy if you want a small, light backup sight behind a red dot and don't want to pay for steel. This Stealth Gray version took 9.5% of front sight picks, third overall.

Best Steel Folding: Kriss Defiance Flip Up Front Sight

Kriss sells the Defiance as a low profile flip up front for AR style rifles. It's steel, so it gives you a metal folding front for about the price of a polymer one.

Pick it if you want steel without paying Magpul MBUS Pro money. It took 8.0% of front sight picks, fourth overall.

What we like

• It's steel, according to our catalog, and it folds flat when you're not using it.
• It's about $45 to $55, cheaper than either Midwest Industries or Ultradyne.

Best Offset: Ultradyne C4 Offset Folding Front

The C4 front uses a post with a hole drilled through its center. You line that hole up with Ultradyne's rear aperture and get what the company calls a circle within a circle, so you can see the target through the front post. It mounts at an offset, so it sits beside a scope instead of behind it.

Buy it if you run a magnified optic and want offset irons with a different sight picture. It took 6.3% of front sight picks, the most of any offset front.

How Do You Match a Front Sight to Your Rifle?

Height matters more than brand. Standard AR sights assume your front sight sits on a rail at the same height as your upper's top rail. If your handguard rail sits lower, or your gas block rail sits higher, the sights won't zero.

Pair the front with a rear from the same line when you can. An MBUS 3 front with an MBUS 3 rear, or a C4 front with a C4 rear, keeps the heights matched. Mixing brands can work, but you may run out of elevation adjustment while you zero.

Magpul holds three of the top six spots, and together they take more than a third of front sight picks. Midwest Industries' fixed front is the only non Magpul sight in the top three. Magpul's steel MBUS Pro sits sixth at 6.1%.
