Best Overall and Best Mid-Length: WMD Guns Nitromet

A gas tube carries gas from the gas block back into the upper receiver. When a bullet passes the port in your barrel, gas flows up through the block, down the tube and into the key on top of your bolt carrier. That push is what cycles the action, so the tube has to survive heat and carbon on every shot.

WMD starts with a stainless tube and then salt bath nitrocarburizes it, a process it calls Nitromet. The treatment hardens the surface and adds heat and corrosion resistance. It took 21.4% of gas tube picks, more than the next two tubes combined. If your barrel has a mid-length gas system, WMD's tube is the one builders chose.

Best Carbine Length: Strike Industries Carbine Length

A carbine gas system puts the port closer to the chamber than a mid-length or rifle system does. It's the original M4 style setup, and you'll find it on many 16 inch barrels and some shorter ones.

Strike's tube took 6.3% of gas tube picks, fourth overall and the most of any carbine tube. If your barrel says carbine length gas, it's the tube builders picked.

Watch out for

• Strike's listing has no spec text, so the material and finish come from our catalog tags, not the maker.
• It costs a few dollars more than WMD's cheapest Nitromet tube.
• It has no hardened coating. The Nitromet tubes are the ones that list a hardness figure.

Which Gas Tube Length Do You Need?

Match the tube to your barrel's gas system. The barrel's listing names it: pistol, carbine, mid-length, intermediate or rifle. A mid-length tube on a carbine barrel won't line up with the gas block, and a carbine tube on a mid-length barrel won't reach the receiver.

The most picked tube is a mid-length, followed by a rifle tube, a pistol tube and a carbine tube. If you're unsure which one your barrel uses, its product page names the gas system length in the specs.

Nitride, Melonite or Polished Stainless?

All four of our picks are stainless steel. What changes is the finish on top.

• Nitride (Nitromet) hardens the surface. WMD lists it at Rc 55, and it's the only finish here with a published hardness figure.
• Melonite is a trade name for a salt bath nitride finish. Aero sells its tubes in Melonite as well as bare stainless, and its Melonite mid-length tube was the fifth most picked tube at 6.1%.
• Polished stainless has no coating at all. You get the bare steel look, and it's the simplest option. The Aero pistol and Strike carbine picks are polished stainless.

Under a free float handguard, nobody sees the tube. If yours is hidden, buy the right length at the best price and spend the difference elsewhere.

Installing a Gas Tube

The tube's straight front end slides into the gas block and a roll pin locks it in place. The bent rear end passes through the hole above the barrel nut and into the upper receiver, where the carrier key rides over it.

Line the tube up before you drive the roll pin, and make sure the gas block's port sits over the barrel's port. If it doesn't, the rifle won't get enough gas to cycle. Our gas block guide covers block fit in detail.
