How we rank: each part counts once per builder who added it to a AR-10 build in Q3 2026. A share is that part's slice of the slot's picks. When the most picked part is sold out everywhere, the most picked one you can buy is shown and the leader is named under it. A lower price pick is the most picked of the slot's top parts that costs at least a quarter less today. Prices and stock are checked daily across every store we track.

An AR-10 shares its layout with the AR-15, but the parts that handle a .308 cartridge are bigger, and not every AR-15 upgrade will fit. The list above shows the part AR-10 builders picked most in each slot we can check for fit, with today's best price.

Which AR-15 parts fit an AR-10?

The fire control group and the furniture mostly carry over, because a typical AR-10 lower uses the same trigger pocket and grip screw as an AR-15. Most AR-15 triggers, pistol grips and safety selectors drop straight in, and many AR-10s take a standard carbine stock.

The parts that move with the bullet don't carry over. The bolt carrier group, buffer and spring are sized for the longer, heavier cartridge, and most .308 barrels thread 5/8x24 where most 5.56 barrels use 1/2x28. Our AR-15 vs AR-10 guide covers the rest of the differences.

Why is the AR-10 list shorter?

The AR-10 never settled on one standard. DPMS pattern rifles, often sold as LR-308 types, and ArmaLite pattern rifles use different uppers, handguard mounts and charging handles, so a part that fits one can miss the other by a fraction of an inch.

In Q3 2026 the most picked charging handle in AR-10 builds was an AR-15 handle, and it won't fit a large frame upper. Charging handles, buffers, pins, bolt catches, magazine releases and handguards stay off this list for that reason. For those parts, go by the fit list from the maker of your upper and lower, or plan the rifle in the AR-10 builder and let it check caliber and platform as you add parts.

What does a better trigger change on an AR-10?

A clean trigger matters most at distance, where a heavy, gritty pull drags the sights off a small target just as the shot breaks. A drop-in trigger replaces the hammer, sear and springs with one housing that's already set up, so the pull stays the same from the first shot to the last.

Single-stage triggers break with one smooth press. Two-stage triggers take up a light first stage and stop at a crisp wall before the break, and many precision shooters like that wall for slow fire off a bag. Check that the maker lists AR-10 or large frame lowers before you order, and see our AR-15 trigger guide for how the types differ.

When should you replace the bolt carrier group?

An AR-10 needs a bolt carrier group made for its caliber and pattern, and the list only shows carriers marked for large frame calibers. Even then, read the maker's notes for your upper before you buy.

Replace the carrier when yours gives you a reason, like a loose gas key or a cracked bolt lug. A carrier that runs and passes inspection won't shrink your groups when you swap it.

What stock and grip suit a .308?

A heavier cartridge makes fit matter more, because recoil punishes a cheek weld that sits too high or too low behind a scope. A stock that puts your eye straight behind the glass will help more than any part that saves a few ounces, and a fixed or precision stock often suits prone and bag work better than a carbine stock.

Grips swap from the AR-15 world without trouble. Our stock guide and pistol grip guide rank each slot for AR-15s.

Scope, LPVO or red dot?

Magnification is the upgrade that lets you use the range you bought an AR-10 for. An LPVO gives you a true 1x up close and magnification in one tube, while a fixed or variable scope does more at distance and less up close.

A red dot still belongs on a fast moving rifle, and the list ranks red dots and scopes in separate rows because builders treat them as separate choices. Our LPVO guide and rifle scope guide go deeper.

Can a 5.56 suppressor go on an AR-10?

No. A .308 bullet won't pass through a can bored for 5.56, so you need a .30 caliber suppressor, and many owners of both rifles buy the .30 can so it works on each. The list only shows suppressors and muzzle devices made for AR-10 calibers.

Since October 9, 2026, ATF no longer enforces the Form 4 for a suppressor, so a dealer can sell you one on a Form 4473 and a background check. Your state may still want it registered, or ban it outright. Our suppressor tax explainer covers what changed in 2026.

Foregrip and safety

A foregrip or handstop gives your support hand the same spot on the handguard every time, and the AR-10's extra weight up front makes that more welcome. An ambidextrous safety lets either thumb run the rifle, and both parts swap in minutes.

How the list is built

Each part counts once for every builder who added it to an AR-10 build on GunPartPicker in the last full calendar quarter. A build counts as an AR-10 when its barrel, upper or lower is a large frame caliber like .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. Prices and stock refresh daily.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do AR-15 parts fit an AR-10?

Some do. Most AR-15 triggers, pistol grips, safety selectors and carbine stocks fit a typical AR-10 lower. Bolt carrier groups, charging handles, buffers and most handguards don't, and muzzle devices for .308 barrels usually use a 5/8x24 thread instead of the 1/2x28 on most 5.56 barrels.

What is the difference between DPMS and ArmaLite pattern AR-10s?

The AR-10 never had one standard. DPMS pattern (LR-308) and ArmaLite pattern rifles differ in parts like the upper receiver, the handguard mount and the charging handle. Check which pattern your upper and lower follow before you order a platform specific part, and use the maker's fit list.

How does GunPartPicker rank AR-10 upgrades?

We count every time a builder adds a part to an AR-10 build in our builder, once per builder, over the last full calendar quarter. A part's share is its slice of that slot's picks. A build counts as an AR-10 when its barrel, upper or lower is a large frame caliber like .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.

Why is there no AR-10 charging handle on the list?

Charging handles depend on whether your upper is DPMS or ArmaLite pattern, and our catalog can't check that for every handle yet. In our data some builders added AR-15 handles to AR-10 builds, which would not fit, so we leave the slot off rather than rank a part that might not work.

Can I use a 5.56 suppressor on an AR-10?

No. A .308 bullet won't pass through a can bored for 5.56. A .30 caliber suppressor can usually be used on a 5.56 rifle as well, which is why many owners of both rifles buy the .30 can. Our AR-10 list only shows suppressors and muzzle devices made for AR-10 calibers.

How often does the AR-10 upgrade list change?

The list is rebuilt every night for prices and stock. The ranking window is the last full calendar quarter, so a new leader shows up when a quarter closes. A slot appears once enough AR-10 builders pick parts for it.
