How we rank: each part counts once per builder who added it to a AR-15 build in Q3 2026. A share is that part's slice of the slot's picks. When the most picked part is sold out everywhere, the most picked one you can buy is shown and the leader is named under it. A lower price pick is the most picked of the slot's top parts that costs at least a quarter less today. Prices and stock are checked daily across every store we track.
Upgrade the parts you touch on every shot before anything else. In Q3 2026 the trigger, the charging handle and the bolt carrier group were the three slots AR-15 builders picked parts for most. The list above shows the part they chose in every slot. Each one carries today's best price.
What does a better trigger change?
A mil-spec trigger is built to fire reliably in any rifle that might be issued, so its pull is heavy and often gritty, and the break is hard to predict. A drop-in trigger replaces the hammer, sear and springs with one housing that comes set up from the factory, and most shooters feel the difference in the first magazine.
Single-stage triggers break with one smooth press from start to finish. Two-stage triggers take up a light first stage and then stop at a crisp wall before the break, and that wall gives you a predictable point to settle the sights before the shot goes.
Our AR-15 trigger guide ranks the whole slot. If you want a forced reset trigger, start with the FRT legal status guide, then read the forced reset trigger guide for what your rifle needs to run one.
Why upgrade the charging handle?
The mil-spec charging handle has one small latch on the left side, and you've got to pinch it with your fingertips to pull the bolt back. An ambidextrous handle adds a latch on the right, and an extended latch gives your hand something to grab when a magnified optic sits low over the handle.
Shooting suppressed raises the gas pressure that blows back through the upper, and a lot of that gas leaks past the charging handle into your face. A gas-busting handle seals or vents that path, and our charging handle guide puts the gas-busting models side by side.
When should you replace the bolt carrier group?
Replace the bolt carrier group when the one you have gives you a reason, like a loose gas key, a cracked bolt lug or a carrier that came out of a kit with sloppy staking. A carrier that runs and passes inspection doesn't make the rifle more accurate when you swap it.
People still upgrade this slot for coatings like nitride or nickel boron that clean faster, and for full mass carriers that cycle a little softer. Our BCG guide covers the coatings and the full slot ranking.
How should a stock and grip fit you?
A stock should put your eye in line with the optic the moment your cheek touches it, because a cheek weld you have to hunt for costs you time on every shot. Grip angle decides how your wrist sits behind the trigger, and a more vertical grip suits the short, squared up stance most people shoot from today.
Both parts swap with basic tools in a few minutes. Our stock guide and pistol grip guide rank each slot in full.
Red dot, LPVO or magnifier?
A red dot or holographic sight puts one aiming point on the target with both eyes open, and inside about 100 yards nothing gets you on target faster. An LPVO gives you a true 1x for close work and magnification for distance in one tube, at the cost of weight and a smaller eye box.
A flip-to-side magnifier behind a red dot sits between the two, giving you magnification when you need it and getting out of the way when you don't. Our red dot guide, LPVO guide and magnifier guide go deeper, and LPVO vs red dot shows how builders split between them over time.
Which small parts make the rifle easier to run?
The cheapest upgrades on the list live in the lower receiver. An ambidextrous safety lets either thumb run the rifle, and a short throw selector cuts the 90 degree throw to as little as 45. An ambidextrous magazine release and an extended bolt catch shorten every reload.
Takedown and pivot pins and an oversized trigger guard won't change where your shots land. They make the rifle faster to strip and easier to handle with gloves. Our safety selector guide, magazine release guide and bolt catch guide cover each slot.
Do you need a weapon light or a laser?
Any rifle that might be used inside a house needs a white light, because you have to identify what you're pointing at before you shoot. Mount the light where your support hand can work the switch, and you can light up a room without taking a hand off the rifle.
Many rifle aiming lasers are infrared units built for night vision, and you can't see an IR beam without a night vision device. Our weapon light guide and laser guide cover both.
Suppressor or muzzle device?
A muzzle device is the quick change. A flash hider cuts the flash you see in low light, a brake redirects gas to cut recoil and muzzle rise, and a mount gives a suppressor something to clamp onto. Most 5.56 barrels thread 1/2x28, and a brake gets loud for anyone standing beside you on the line.
Since October 9, 2026, ATF no longer enforces the Form 4 for a suppressor, so a dealer can sell you one on a Form 4473 and a background check. Your state may still want it registered, or ban it outright. Our suppressor tax explainer covers what changed in 2026, and the AR-15 suppressor guide covers the cans.
What do a buffer and spring tune?
The buffer and spring decide how hard the bolt carrier slams back and forth on each shot. A heavier buffer slows the carrier, and that helps a rifle that runs overgassed or cycles harder once a suppressor goes on. A flat wire or braided spring changes how the recoil impulse feels against your shoulder.
Change one part at a time and test it with the ammunition you'll shoot most. Our buffer guide and buffer spring guide cover each slot.
Is a free-float handguard worth it?
A free-float handguard attaches to the barrel nut and never touches the barrel, so pressure from a sling or a rest can't push your point of impact around. It also gives you M-LOK slots wherever you want a light, a grip or a sling mount.
Swapping one usually means pulling the muzzle device and sometimes the gas block, so it's a bigger job than the parts above. Our handguard guide covers lengths and mounting.
How the list is built
Each part counts once for every builder who added it to an AR-15 build on GunPartPicker in the last full calendar quarter. Prices and stock refresh daily. For upgrades by rifle and barrel length, see AR-15 upgrades by setup. To plan a whole rifle instead, start in the AR-15 builder.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the best first upgrade for an AR-15?
- In our Q3 2026 build data the trigger was the slot the most AR-15 builders picked a part for, ahead of the charging handle and the bolt carrier group. The list at the top of our Best AR-15 Upgrades guide shows the trigger builders pick most right now, with a live price.
How does GunPartPicker rank AR-15 upgrades?
- We count every time a builder adds a part to an AR-15 build in our builder, once per builder, over the last full calendar quarter. A part's share is its slice of that slot's picks. We decide a build is an AR-15 from its barrel, upper or lower, and the list refreshes every night.
Are AR-15 upgrades worth it on a budget rifle?
- The parts you touch on every shot pay off first on a budget rifle: the trigger, grip, stock and sights. Replace a bolt carrier group when you have a reason, like a failed gas key or a bolt that fails inspection, not because a new one looks nicer.
Do AR-15 upgrades fit an AR-10?
- Many controls do. Most AR-15 triggers, pistol grips, safety selectors and carbine stocks fit a typical AR-10 lower. Charging handles, bolt carrier groups, buffers and handguards are sized for each platform, and AR-10s come in more than one pattern, so check before you buy. We keep a separate AR-10 upgrades list.
How often does the AR-15 upgrade list change?
- The list is rebuilt every night, so prices, stock and late saved builds stay current. The ranking window is the last full calendar quarter, which means a new leader in a slot shows up when a quarter closes.
Are all of these AR-15 upgrades legal in my state?
- Not everywhere. Some states restrict features like flash hiders, adjustable stocks or pistol grips on certain rifles, and some ban suppressors outright. Check your state on our gun laws pages before you order, and verify current law, because it changes.
